A push through the $82,000 barrier on Sept. 8 — clearing the Sept. 3 high near $82,100-$82,200 — has put bitcoin's September advance at a crossroads, with the Fear & Greed Index climbing to 74 and traders weighing whether elevated sentiment marks a local top.
The breakout follows a rejection at $80,537 on Sept. 7 that pushed bitcoin to $79,013 before buyers defended the level and drove prices back up through the session. The move through $82,000 marks the first sustained push above that zone since early September, when the asset first tested it.
The Fear & Greed Index at 74 places sentiment firmly in greed territory. Historically, readings above 70 have often preceded short-term pullbacks as traders lock in profits after extended runs. The index's climb comes as bitcoin's daily moving average tape remains broadly constructive — 13 of 15 daily MAs are flashing bullish signals, with the EMA(10) at $78,966 and the SMA(20) at $77,993 supporting the higher-time-frame trend.
Momentum oscillators, however, present a mixed picture. The MACD at 3,107 remains bearish, and the Hull moving average at $80,469 has been flashing negative warnings. The RSI sits at 64, elevated but below overbought territory, while the ADX at 48 indicates a strong directional trend. The Awesome oscillator at 7,799 and momentum at 1,630 are bullish, but the bearish MACD reading suggests the short-term momentum shift has not fully resolved.
Support below the breakout sits at $79,013-$79,081, with deeper support at $76,298-$76,767, which includes the 20-day EMA at $76,767. The next resistance level above $82,108 could determine whether the rally extends or stalls. A 4-hour close below $79,013 would put the $76,300-$77,000 region back in play, while a sustained hold above $82,108 would open the path toward new September highs.
The key question for traders is whether the $82K breakout holds. If bitcoin sustains above this level with the Fear & Greed Index in greed territory, the rally could attract further retail FOMO buying. But historically, greed readings above 70 have often coincided with local tops, and a failure to hold $82K could trigger profit-taking that sends prices back toward the $79,000-$80,500 range. The broader crypto market will watch whether altcoins follow bitcoin's lead or diverge, as elevated BTC dominance often signals risk-off rotation within digital assets. Ethereum's correlation with bitcoin remains a key gauge — if ETH fails to confirm the breakout, it could suggest the move is driven by narrow BTC-specific flows rather than broad market participation.
