Arbitrum announced progress on integrating zero-knowledge proofs into its BoLD settlement protocol, reducing L1 withdrawal times from seven days to a few hours.
The announcement was published by Daniel Lumi, a researcher at Offchain Labs, the core development team behind the Arbitrum ecosystem.
The update details six technical milestones. Network blocks can now be proven via ZK using SP1, the zkVM developed by Succinct, executing the same state transition function as the current optimistic prover. Under the expanded scheme, an assertion can be confirmed as soon as a valid ZK proof is submitted and a new Fast Confirmation Committee endorses it, without waiting for the full challenge period. BoLD's dispute game remains active as a fallback layer — if no ZK proof arrives, the chain settles exactly as it does today. ZK proofs, attestations and fraud proofs operate together under a single mechanism.
Offchain Labs will bring a proposal to the Arbitrum DAO to upgrade Arbitrum One under the new scheme. The initiative is part of a roadmap presented in early 2026 to establish the platform as reference infrastructure for financial products in the programmable economy.
ZK Coverage Extends to Stylus Contracts
The prover now covers Stylus contracts, which extends the EVM with support for Rust, C/C++, Move and other languages that compile to WASM. Arbitrum presents itself as the first production stack to make both EVM and WASM contracts executable by ZK.
The network validator was rebuilt as an independent service in Rust, eliminating the Go layer that previously wrapped it. This allows standard validation and proof generation to share a single interface. In parallel, the ZK code is being migrated from an experimental branch into the main Arbitrum Nitro codebase.
The multi-proving architecture represents a structural shift for how optimistic rollups settle to Ethereum. Rather than relying solely on fraud proofs with a seven-day dispute window, Arbitrum now layers ZK proofs on top, giving users a faster path to finality while preserving the existing security guarantees of BoLD's challenge game.
Next Steps and Competitive Pressure
Next steps include reducing costs and latency through Reth-based execution, proving the L1 message inbox to ensure end-to-end verifiability, and enabling ZK settlement configuration as a native option in nodes.
The upgrade gives Arbitrum a significant edge in withdrawal efficiency compared to other optimistic rollups on Ethereum that still rely on seven-day challenge windows. Protocols such as Optimism and Base may face pressure to accelerate their own proving technology roadmaps. For ARB token holders, the technical milestone strengthens the case for Arbitrum as institutional-grade infrastructure as the programmable economy expands, particularly as financial products increasingly require near-instant settlement finality.
