AMD shares surged 6.5% to $514.39 on Friday after the chipmaker priced a $4.75 billion bond offering to fund AI and data center expansion.
"AMD is committed to maintaining its strong financial balance sheet," a company spokesperson said, pointing to investment-grade credit ratings as the focus shifts to pricing rather than access.
The four-tranche senior unsecured deal, with maturities from 2029 to 2036, represents 124% to 155% of AMD's outstanding debt of $3.226 billion. Initial spreads were set between 70 and 115 basis points over Treasuries. The company held $13.111 billion in cash and short-term investments as of June 27, with quarterly free cash flow of $1.558 billion. The stock's gain outpaced Nvidia, which was unchanged, while Broadcom fell 5.9% and Intel dropped 2.0%.
The bond sale follows Q2 revenue of $11.54 billion, up 50.1% year over year, with data center revenue more than doubling to $6.72 billion. Management guided Q3 revenue to approximately $13 billion, up 41% year over year, as the company scales AI infrastructure spending. The bonds are set to settle August 17.
Data Center Surge Drives Record Quarter
AMD's Q2 2026 results, reported August 4, showed non-GAAP EPS of $1.66, beating consensus by 3.06%. Data center revenue of $6.72 billion now represents 58% of total revenue. Capital expenditure climbed to $808 million, up 187% from $282 million in the prior-year quarter, while operating cash flow covered expenditures by nearly threefold.
The company's Helios-powered AI server portfolio, targeting training and inference workloads in large data centers, is central to the growth story. CEO Lisa Su said the company delivered "an excellent quarter, with record revenue and profitability." Adjusted gross margin is projected to remain near 56% in Q3. Client revenue rose 23% to $3.062 billion, while gaming revenue fell 31% to $779 million and embedded revenue gained 19% to $977 million.
Valuation and Analyst Views
AMD shares remain up 130% year to date and 162% over the past 12 months, far outpacing the S&P 500's 13.9% year-to-date gain. The stock trades at a price-to-earnings ratio near 182, reflecting high expectations for continued AI-driven growth. The S&P 500 slipped 0.17% on Friday as investors weighed sluggish retail sales and Middle East tensions.
Analyst consensus stands at Moderate Buy, with 34 buy or strong buy ratings, 10 holds, and one sell. The average price target of $546.87 implies 6.3% upside from Friday's close, though targets range widely from $235 to $1,250. Tiger Global disclosed a new holding of 674,727 AMD shares, valued at about $392 million as of June 30.
The bond issuance introduces leverage considerations that were less prominent when AMD relied more heavily on organic funding. With the stock trading at a premium multiple, the market is treating the debt as fuel for AI growth rather than a financial risk. The final pricing and use of proceeds, expected at settlement on August 17, will determine whether investor confidence holds.
