Abu Dhabi's ADGM recognized Tether Gold (XAU₮) as an Accepted Spot Commodity, giving authorized firms in the international financial center a regulated path to offer services tied to the gold-backed token.
"The UAE continues to show real leadership in digital asset regulation, and Tether is proud to keep building alongside that progress," Paolo Ardoino, chief executive officer of Tether, said. "By bringing XAU₮ into its Spot Commodities framework, ADGM is creating new room for firms with the relevant regulatory permissions to work with a token backed by physical gold."
The recognition builds on ADGM's Financial Services Regulatory Authority's earlier approval of USD₮ as an Accepted Fiat Referenced Token, expanding the range of Tether products that authorized firms in the jurisdiction can support. Each full XAU₮ token represents one troy fine ounce of gold on a London Good Delivery bar, combining physical backing with blockchain-based transferability.
Tokenized real-world assets now represent more than $31 billion in distributed asset value, up from roughly $6.6 billion a year earlier, as institutions seek more efficient ways to access and move traditional assets on chain. The ADGM recognition gives XAU₮ a compliance framework that could accelerate its adoption among regulated firms in the Middle East.
"ADGM continues to advance a trusted, well-regulated environment that enables responsible innovation across digital assets and tokenised real-world assets," Arvind Ramamurthy, chief market development officer at ADGM, said. "The recognition of XAU₮ as an Accepted Spot Commodity further strengthens the breadth of products and services available to firms operating from ADGM."
The approval followed continued engagement between Tether and ADGM to demonstrate the resilience and transparency of the company's operations, according to the announcement. Tether said it will continue working with regulators and licensed firms in the UAE and across the region to support digital asset adoption.
The recognition marks another step in Tether's expanding presence in the UAE, where digital asset policy has moved from experimentation toward institution-ready use cases. XAU₮ can be traded or transferred at any time and is redeemable for physical gold, with each allocated bar identifiable by serial number, purity, and weight.
