PC makers are absorbing their third round of Intel price increases in under a year, and the market reaction was immediate: Lenovo Group (00992.HK) tumbled 7.66 percent to HKD29.88 on Monday, with 17.08 million shares traded for HKD527 million.
The latest 10 percent hike on PC CPUs, effective October 5, follows increases of roughly 10 percent in the first quarter and again in July, when select consumer and server chips saw price jumps ranging from tens of dollars to more than $1,000, according to supply chain sources cited by Taiwan's DigiTimes. Intel's strategy under CEO Lip-Bu Tan prioritizes profitability over market share growth, a shift that Tan framed after the company's fiscal second quarter as "our strongest revenue growth in more than fifteen years."
Intel posted $16.1 billion in revenue for the quarter, beating expectations by $1.8 billion, with non-GAAP earnings per share of $0.42 nearly doubling analyst projections. Data center and AI revenue climbed 59 percent year over year to $6.3 billion, while Intel Foundry revenue reached $5.8 billion.
Short selling on Lenovo reached 27.974 percent of turnover, or $552.33 million, adding downward pressure to a session where shares bottomed at HKD29.86 before closing at HKD29.88.
Margin over market share
Intel appears willing to accept some erosion in unit market share if it means improving average selling prices and gross margins, supply chain analysts said. The company's PC CPU business could still regain roughly 78 percent unit share in a global PC market expected to reach about 260 million units in 2026, but the emphasis is now on extracting more revenue per chip rather than maximizing volume.
The margin-first approach extends to product rationalization. Tan is reviewing Intel's Small Core product line, which serves industrial PCs, Internet of Things devices, and embedded systems — structurally lower-margin segments that prioritize cost and platform longevity over performance. Products that fail to clear a profitability threshold could enter end-of-life status, potentially opening the door for ARM-based competitors such as Qualcomm and MediaTek in industrial computing and IoT applications.
Intel's own fabs are currently prioritizing server CPU production, which carries better margins than chips outsourced to TSMC. But server CPU capacity remains insufficient to meet demand, squeezing PC CPU output in the process. Accelerating server production may require shifting some orders to TSMC, creating a manufacturing dilemma that pits margin optimization against capacity constraints. Market attention remains fixed on Intel's 18A process node yields, which have been running approximately 25 percent above targets set in March, and the progress of its 14A node.
Wall Street recalibrates
Intel shares peaked at $140.94 on June 22 after gaining roughly 400 percent in a year, before retreating about 32 percent to around $95.80. The stock remains up nearly 160 percent year to date. Mizuho's Vijay Rakesh recently cut his price target to $92 from $109 while maintaining a Hold rating, viewing the stock as "fairly valued" at current levels. Wall Street consensus among 31 analysts covering Intel stands at 5 buys, 24 holds, and 2 sells, with an average price target of $116.16.
The competitive backdrop adds urgency to Intel's margin push. AMD's x86 server CPU market share reached 34.5 percent in the latest quarter, up 7.3 percentage points, while Intel's share fell to roughly 65.5 percent. Nvidia's Grace server CPU has crossed $5 billion in trailing 12-month revenue, and the company projects roughly $20 billion in total server CPU demand this fiscal year. Nvidia's approach differs fundamentally from Intel's — rather than competing on CPU specifications alone, Nvidia integrates its Vera CPU into its Rubin rack-scale platform, meaning hyperscalers purchasing the full system acquire Nvidia CPUs by default.
For PC OEMs, the question is how much of Intel's pricing power they can pass through to consumers. With global PC shipments already projected to decline from 260 million to about 250 million units in 2027, the sector faces a double squeeze: higher input costs and softening demand. Lenovo's 7.66 percent drop on Monday suggests the market is beginning to price in that margin compression. Intel and AMD are expected to launch their next major platforms in March 2027 and June-July 2027 respectively, which could prompt early inventory building by brand vendors and distributors.
