The Ethereum Foundation appointed longtime security researcher pcaversaccio to its board, expanding the group to four members as the organization behind the world's second-largest blockchain reshapes its leadership structure.
The Ethereum Foundation named pcaversaccio, a prominent security researcher and co-founder of the emergency response initiative SEAL 911, to its board for an initial one-year voluntary term, the foundation said July 29. The appointment brings the board to four members: President Aya Miyaguchi, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, Swiss legal counsel Patrick Storchenegger and pcaversaccio.
"pc is a living example of the values we aim to uphold at the Ethereum Foundation," Miyaguchi said in a post on X. "He brings far more than security expertise — he brings a deep commitment to the principles of censorship resistance, open source development, privacy and decentralization."
pcaversaccio, known widely as "pc" in the Ethereum community, has served on the foundation's Silviculture Society, an advisory group that provides informal guidance on preserving Ethereum's core principles. He also authored The Ethereum Cypherpunk Manifesto in 2024 and Ethereum Privacy: The Road to Self-Sovereignty in 2025, both of which advocate for stronger privacy protections across the ecosystem. Beyond his advocacy work, he has developed widely used open-source security tools including CreateX, a universal smart contract deployment framework, and snekmate, a security-focused library for Vyper smart contracts.
The board appointment comes as the Ethereum Foundation undergoes a broader leadership overhaul. In recent months, several high-profile researchers and executives have departed the organization, with some launching new Ethereum-focused ventures outside the foundation. Initiatives such as ETH Ventures — backed by Consensus and BitMine — and Ethereum Institutional have emerged to accelerate investment and enterprise adoption, signaling a shift toward a more distributed governance model where influence over Ethereum's future is spread across multiple organizations rather than centered on a single entity.
What the Board Appointment Signals
The addition of a security researcher to the foundation's highest governing body reflects a strategic emphasis on protocol security and long-term stewardship as Ethereum enters a new phase of institutional adoption. The board is responsible for setting the foundation's strategic vision, ensuring management decisions align with organizational values, and acting as a "security council" to safeguard the foundation's mission under Swiss law, where the EF is based.
pcaversaccio's appointment also reinforces the foundation's commitment to the cypherpunk ethos that has defined Ethereum since its inception. In a post on X shortly after the announcement, he summed up his philosophy in two words: "unconditional privacy."
Broader Context
The leadership changes at the Ethereum Foundation do not alter the network's technical roadmap, but they do reshape how the ecosystem's governance is perceived by developers and institutional participants. With new organizations like ETH Ventures and Ethereum Institutional taking on roles that were once the foundation's domain, the EF is refocusing on its original mandate as a long-term steward rather than the central hub of ecosystem development.
For Ethereum holders and developers, the question is whether this distributed governance model can maintain the coordination that has been a hallmark of the network's development. The foundation's expanded board — now with a dedicated security voice — suggests one answer: that protocol integrity and value preservation will remain the EF's primary focus, even as other organizations take on more active roles in ecosystem growth.
