Dogecoin is flashing early breakout signals as futures activity climbs even as the token hovers near its 2026 low of $0.069.

Dogecoin futures open interest is rising across Binance and Bybit as the meme coin trades near its yearly low of $0.069, with analysts identifying a potential breakout range from $0.65 to above $3, according to market data. The divergence between rising derivatives activity and fading spot ETF demand has created an unusual setup for the largest meme token by market capitalization, which currently sits at roughly $10 billion.
Coinglass data shows DOGE's long-to-short ratio at 0.75 as of July 17, its lowest in over a month, while funding rates flipped negative to -0.0004%, reflecting bearish positioning among retail traders. When funding rates turn negative, short positions pay longs to maintain their bets, a dynamic that historically precedes short-squeeze rallies if the price reverses upward. The last time DOGE funding rates were this negative in March, the token rallied 18% over the following week.
DOGE spot ETF inflows have remained largely silent over the past two weeks, according to SoSoValue data, indicating muted institutional demand. The lack of ETF buying pressure has left the token trading below its 50-day, 100-day and 200-day exponential moving averages at $0.081, $0.088 and $0.104, respectively. The Relative Strength Index near 35 remains weak but shy of oversold territory, suggesting room for further downside before a technical bounce.
The broader crypto market has shown mixed signals this month. Bitcoin traded near $64,000 as of July 20, while XRP held around $1.09 with Korean exchanges showing a premium that suggests stronger local demand. DOGE's setup differs from both: its derivatives market is pricing in a potential reversal while spot flows remain absent. Other meme coins like Shiba Inu and Bonk have also struggled to gain traction, with the sector broadly underperforming large-cap tokens.
A breakout above the horizontal resistance at $0.079 could open the path toward the 50-day EMA at $0.081 and beyond, with analysts targeting $0.65 as the first major upside level. A close below $0.069, however, would expose the $0.065 psychological support, extending the bearish trend that has persisted since late 2025. The contrasting signals between derivatives and spot markets make the next directional move critical for DOGE's near-term trajectory.
