XRP derivatives open interest climbed to $2.6 billion, the fourth-largest in crypto, as traders repositioned aggressively.
XRP futures open interest reached $2.6 billion on July 20, rising more than 10% in 24 hours, according to CoinGlass data.
The figure puts XRP ahead of HYPE to become the fourth-largest crypto asset by derivatives open interest, CoinGlass data shows. The metric tracks the value of outstanding futures contracts that have not yet been settled or closed.
XRP traded at $1.09 as of 08:00 UTC, up 0.99% over 24 hours, with a market capitalization of $68.46 billion and $925.26 million in trading volume. The token remains beneath all major moving averages — the 20-day SMA at $1.2885, the 50-day at $1.8896 and the 200-day at $1.2127 — while the Relative Strength Index at 34.06 approaches oversold territory.
The derivatives buildup creates a two-way risk: a clean price advance with steady funding would suggest the added open interest is being absorbed, while a sudden reversal could turn the same buildup into liquidation pressure. XRP's next test is whether the $1.10-to-$1.12 neckline zone — a developing inverse head-and-shoulders formation on daily timeframes — can be breached to the upside.
A technical pattern identified by analyst Bird on the XRP Dominance chart adds another layer. The weekly MACD momentum reset on XRP's market share metric has preceded significant upward moves on two prior occasions, according to the analyst's July 19 post. A separate observation from analyst MikybullCrypto characterized XRP as "the best low-risk play right now" with "at least 5x target."
The open interest surge comes as the broader crypto market shows signs of caution. CoinMarketCap's Fear and Greed index sits at 34, deep in "fear" territory, while the average RSI across crypto pairs has slipped to 44.07. Bitcoin futures OI growth stalled near 750,000 BTC, and ether futures show a similar pattern of caution, according to CoinGlass data.
For XRP bulls, confirmation would require spot volume to rise alongside the derivatives buildup. If open interest increases while spot demand stays weak, the move may be more speculative than structural. The token's ability to hold above $1.06 support — the level that preserved the recovery attempt on the 4-hour timeframe — will determine whether the $2.6 billion in open interest becomes fuel for a breakout or a liquidation event.
