Daniel Moreno-Gama, the 20-year-old Texas man accused of attacking the home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, is facing two counts of attempted murder and multiple arson-related charges at the state and federal level. The incident highlights a growing and violent extremism fueled by online rhetoric against artificial intelligence and corporate executives.
"We interpret this behavior for just what it is: An attempt on Mr. Altman’s life and an extreme danger to those around him and those who work for his company," San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said at a press conference. Moreno-Gama was ordered held without bail, with his arraignment moved to May 5.
According to the federal criminal complaint, Moreno-Gama threw a Molotov cocktail at Altman's San Francisco home before traveling to OpenAI's headquarters, where he allegedly attempted to break in with a chair. Investigators found a manifesto in his possession that warned of AI wiping out humanity and called for the "Luigi-ing" of tech CEOs, a reference to Luigi Mangione, who is accused of killing the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. The document reportedly included a message to Altman: "If by some miracle you live, then I would take this as a sign from the divine to redeem yourself."
The attack has drawn attention to the radicalization occurring in some online communities. Months before the incident, Moreno-Gama discussed "Luigi'ing some tech CEOs" in an online chat with podcast producers, according to The Wall Street Journal. While he downplayed the comments as not "practical" during a subsequent podcast interview, his actions suggest a different reality. His public defender, Diamond Ward, argued the incident was a "property crime, at best," attributing his actions to an "acute mental-health crisis."
In a blog post following the attack, Altman shared a photo of his family and called for a de-escalation of rhetoric. "To ensure society gets AI right, we need to work through the democratic process," OpenAI said in a statement. "However, there is no place in our democracy for violence against anyone."
