Strategy tokenized its MSTR equity on the Solana blockchain via the Sunrise gateway on July 28, giving global investors onchain access to the company's 843,775 Bitcoin treasury.
"Tokenizing MSTR on Solana bridges the gap between traditional equity markets and decentralized finance," a Strategy spokesperson said in a statement.
The $MSTR token, launched through Sunrise's tokenization infrastructure, represents equity in Strategy — the corporate Bitcoin holder that has spent $63.69 billion accumulating its 843,775 BTC stack. The company's cash reserves stand at $3.75 billion, according to its latest disclosures. Solana's total value locked across DeFi protocols stood at roughly $5 billion as of late July, per DefiLlama data.
The tokenization could significantly boost Solana's ecosystem by attracting traditional finance liquidity and institutional participants, while setting a precedent for more equity tokenization on the network. Regulatory scrutiny may follow, but the move marks a major convergence of crypto and traditional capital markets.
Strategy, formerly MicroStrategy, has gone five straight weeks without buying Bitcoin — its longest pause in two years — instead padding its cash reserve by $525 million through an at-the-market share sale. The company sold 5.4 million MSTR shares between July 20 and 26 to raise cash, while its Bitcoin holdings stayed frozen at 843,775 BTC since a 520-coin purchase on June 22.
The Sunrise gateway, which facilitates the issuance of tokenized real-world assets on Solana, enables the $MSTR token to trade alongside Solana-native assets. The launch follows a broader trend of traditional financial assets migrating onchain, with Coinbase recently adding a "Launches" tab to its DEX for new Base and Solana tokens.
Strategy's BTC stack is currently $8.5 billion underwater against its $63.69 billion cost basis, with Bitcoin trading at $63,400 as of Monday — down 2.7% on the day. The company faces $1.76 billion in annual preferred dividend and debt interest obligations.
