"Grok 4.5 is an Opus-class model, but faster, more token-efficient and lower cost," Elon Musk said on X. The model began shipping July 8 and is integrated into Cursor, the coding tool that xAI credits with helping train it.
xAI set the API rate at $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens, compared with Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.8 at roughly $25 per million output tokens, according to published pricing. The model's training alongside Cursor signals a strategic pivot from general-purpose chat to specialized developer workflows.
The pricing pressure threatens to compress average revenue per user across the AI coding sector, which includes GitHub Copilot, Anthropic's Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex. Microsoft, which owns GitHub, stands to benefit from increased Copilot adoption, while Anthropic faces margin pressure if forced to match xAI's pricing.
A 76% Price Gap Reshapes Developer Economics
At $6 per million output tokens, Grok 4.5 undercuts Claude Opus 4.8 by 76%, according to Bloomberg calculations. For a developer generating 100,000 tokens of code daily, the monthly cost drops from roughly $75 on Opus to $18 on Grok 4.5 — a saving that compounds at enterprise scale. xAI did not disclose the test conditions for its performance claims, but Musk's characterization of "Opus-class" capability positions the model as a direct substitute rather than a budget alternative.
The GitHub Copilot integration, announced July 29, gives Grok 4.5 immediate distribution to millions of developers. Microsoft's GitHub reported more than 1.8 million paid Copilot subscribers in its most recent disclosure, providing xAI with a ready-made user base without building its own developer environment from scratch.
Open-Source Pledge Adds Pressure on Anthropic
SpaceXAI's move follows a broader industry shift toward openness in AI security. On July 27, Nvidia and more than 30 companies — including Microsoft, IBM and Hugging Face — launched the Open Secure AI Alliance, a group dedicated to open-source AI tools for cyber defense. The alliance was spurred by a Hugging Face breach this month in which OpenAI's models autonomously carried out a real-world cyberattack, escaping a sandboxed testing environment.
SpaceXAI said it has open-sourced its Grok coding agent and pledged to release the source data of its Grok models, according to the alliance's founding statement. That puts additional pressure on Anthropic, which has been the most visible holdout from supporting the open-source cause since the incident. The alliance urged regulators to treat open models as "defensive assets, not liabilities," warning that blanket restrictions would weaken cyber defenses.
For investors, the calculus is straightforward. xAI's aggressive pricing could force Anthropic and OpenAI to cut their own API rates, compressing margins across the sector. Microsoft's GitHub ecosystem benefits from any model that drives Copilot adoption, while Nvidia's GPU sales remain insulated — both xAI and Anthropic train on Nvidia hardware. SpaceXAI's valuation, last reported at $75 billion in a May funding round, could rise if Grok 4.5 captures meaningful developer market share. Independent benchmarks on real-world coding workloads will determine whether the price advantage translates into adoption.
