Solayer launched Margin Trade, an onchain perpetual futures platform on its Solana Virtual Machine-based blockchain. The platform supports trading of crypto, commodities and equities through a single margin account. Solana's perpetuals open interest market share has fallen to about 3% as Hyperliquid dominates the sector.
Solayer launched an onchain perpetual futures platform on its Solana Virtual Machine-based blockchain, entering a market where Solana's perps share has fallen to 3%.
"Margin Trade supports trading of crypto, commodities and equities through a single margin account on Solana," Solayer said in a statement. The platform is designed to deliver trading speeds and capital efficiency comparable to traditional finance while maintaining blockchain transparency and self-custody.
Solana's perpetuals open interest market share ended March at about 3%, with volume share at roughly 2%, according to Galaxy Research. Hyperliquid has dominated the onchain derivatives market, pulling the highest-value activity away from Solana. Solana perpetuals volumes declined 34% quarter over quarter, the report showed.
The launch comes as competition in onchain perpetuals intensifies. Ondo Finance plans to launch Ondo Perps on June 9, offering leveraged trading of US stocks and ETFs outside the US. Market participants say growth in onchain perpetuals could narrow the divide between decentralized finance and traditional finance.
Solayer's Margin Trade enters a market where Solana's general-purpose execution layer has struggled to compete with specialized venues. Serious market makers need predictable transaction ordering and the ability to cancel orders in milliseconds, guarantees Solana mainnet does not yet offer, according to Galaxy Research. The Solana Foundation's roadmap targets improvements through the Alpenglow upgrade and Multiple Concurrent Proposers implementation, both aimed at making execution more predictable for latency-sensitive applications.
The onchain derivatives market has been growing rapidly, led by Hyperliquid, which has expanded into non-crypto assets such as stocks and commodities through its HIP-3 markets. Wallet providers like Phantom have integrated Hyperliquid perps as their default option, compounding its distribution advantage.
