Automaker Seres is drawing its technical battle lines with Huawei, launching a unified 'Magic Cube' platform and a high-volume M6 model that received over 10,000 orders in just 15 minutes.

At the Beijing Auto Show on April 24, Seres moved to define its own technical identity within its deep partnership with Huawei, launching a new platform and a mass-market SUV aimed squarely at leaders like Tesla. The automaker unveiled its "Magic Cube" technology platform, a unified architecture integrating its own hardware with Huawei's intelligent systems, while simultaneously starting deliveries of its AITO M6 model, which secured over 10,000 firm orders within 15 minutes of its launch.
The new platform is for "software-defined vehicles, AI-driven, and evolving towards vehicle-level L4 embodied intelligence," Seres Auto President He Liyang said at the event. This framework formally separates responsibilities, with Seres leading development on the powertrain and a sophisticated chassis featuring active hydraulic suspension, while Huawei provides the advanced driver-assistance system (ADS 5), HarmonySpace 6 cockpit, and the "Xiao Yi" intelligent assistant.
Priced at ¥259,800 ($35,850) for the extended-range version, the AITO M6 enters the most competitive segment of China's EV market, challenging the Tesla Model Y, Xpeng G6, and IM LS6. To stand out, Seres is equipping the M6 with features typically found in premium models, including Huawei's Tuling platform, air suspension, and an 896-line lidar, a strategy of high-end features at a lower price to drive volume.
The dual launch reveals Seres' core strategy: use the brand equity from its high-end M9 flagship to boost the M6's market appeal, and use the M6's sales volume to fund the platform's ongoing research and development. After selling one million vehicles in 46 months, Seres must now prove it can scale profitably to close the gap with luxury leaders like BMW, Mercedes, and Audi, and domestic giant BYD.
The Magic Cube platform marks the first time Seres has formally articulated its technical contributions alongside Huawei's, moving beyond the perception of being just a manufacturing partner. The architecture details a clear division: Seres is responsible for the vehicle's physical foundation, including its fifth-generation extended-range powertrain and advanced, wire-controlled chassis. Huawei, in turn, supplies the complete intelligent "brain," from the sensor suite to the in-car operating system.
This level of co-branded platform integration is unique in the auto industry. Traditional automakers do not typically highlight suppliers like Bosch or Continental in their core platform narrative. However, the depth of the "Hongmeng Intelligent Driving" collaboration necessitates a new model, one where Seres handles vehicle engineering and Huawei manages the end-to-end intelligent experience. The success of this parallel-track platform will be tested by the market's reception of its future products, starting with the next-generation M9 series.
Before the new platform can be fully validated by the M9, Seres faces the urgent task of generating significant sales volume with the M6. The initial order velocity suggests strong demand, driven by a value proposition that Seres Chairman Zhang Zhengping called "million-level safety" for a vehicle aimed at young buyers.
The strategy is a calculated gamble. By offering premium features like air suspension and advanced driver aids as standard, Seres is betting that it can attract a critical mass of new users. The resulting economies of scale would then be needed to absorb the high component costs and competitive pricing. With 426,000 vehicles delivered in 2025, Seres has established itself in the premium market, but remains far behind the volume of German luxury brands or the sheer scale of BYD. The M6 and the Magic Cube platform are two halves of a single plan to bridge that gap.
