Ondo Activates Chainlink Oracles for Tokenized Equities on Ethereum
Ondo Finance has integrated Chainlink as its official data oracle, enabling live price feeds for its tokenized U.S. stocks on the Ethereum mainnet. The initial support covers SPYon, which tracks the SPDR S&P 500 ETF; QQQon, representing the Invesco QQQ ETF; and TSLAon, for Tesla stock. This integration provides decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols with reliable on-chain pricing, which is essential for setting collateral parameters and managing liquidations. The DeFi lending market Euler is the first protocol to leverage these new feeds, allowing its users to post the tokenized equities as collateral to borrow stablecoins.
Tokenized Stocks Evolve From Price Exposure to Active Collateral
This initiative directly addresses a significant hurdle for the adoption of tokenized securities. Previously, these assets were primarily held for price exposure but lacked broad acceptance as collateral within DeFi. By pairing exchange-linked liquidity with verifiable on-chain price data from Chainlink, Ondo unlocks the potential for its tokenized stocks to be used in lending, borrowing, and other structured financial products. The price feeds are designed to account for corporate actions like dividends, ensuring that applications reference the most up-to-date equity values. Risk parameters for the new lending markets, such as collateral factors and liquidation thresholds, are being set and monitored by Sentora.
Ondo Competes in Crowded Race to Tokenize US Equities
The move places Ondo Finance within a rapidly accelerating trend of bringing traditional financial assets onto blockchain rails. Legacy institutions are making significant strides, with Nasdaq filing for a rule change in September to list tokenized stocks and the New York Stock Exchange announcing on January 19 its development of a blockchain-based trading platform. Meanwhile, crypto-native platforms are also expanding their offerings. Fintech firm Robinhood launched a public testnet for its own Ethereum layer-2 network designed for tokenized assets, after introducing nearly 500 tokenized stocks for its EU users in October.
