Near Protocol’s native token (NEAR) gained more than 27 percent in 24 hours, trading at $2.25, after the project announced a major “dynamic resharding” upgrade set for June 2026. The move positions NEAR among the top-performing large-cap digital assets over the period.
"Dynamic resharding is coming to NEAR," the protocol's official account announced on X. "The upcoming network upgrade will enable the protocol to add shards automatically as demand grows. This delivers on NEAR's founding vision of building the world's most scalable blockchain protocol."
The upgrade automates a process that previously required weeks of manual coordination among network validators and a formal vote. Shards are parallel processing lanes that allow a blockchain to handle more traffic. With the new system, when a shard reaches a predetermined capacity threshold, the network will automatically split it to create more capacity without human intervention. Near co-founder Illia Polosukhin said the upgrade will allow the network to scale beyond 70 shards, projecting throughput higher than Visa.
This automation is designed to support an on-chain economy driven by artificial intelligence, where automated agents may require sudden, massive spikes in transaction capacity. The June network upgrade also introduces post-quantum-safe signing, a cryptographic enhancement intended to secure user funds against the theoretical threat of future quantum computers capable of breaking current encryption standards.
The market reaction points to strong investor demand ahead of the upgrade. Data shared by Bitwise's CEO shows its European-listed Bitwise Near Staking ETP attracted $7 million in inflows this week. The price rally for NEAR comes as Bitcoin has retraced from recent highs, suggesting a rotation of capital into altcoins with strong technical narratives. Near’s approach to scaling contrasts with Ethereum, which has faced repeated delays in its own sharding roadmap, and Solana, which uses a single, high-performance chain.
While the announcement has fueled significant gains, the rally's sustainability depends on a successful rollout of the upgrade. Any bugs or delays could see the recent 28% price increase unwind. If it works as planned, however, automatic scaling could become a new benchmark for Layer 1 blockchains, putting pressure on competitors that rely on manual capacity planning.
