Samsung Electro-Mechanics raised prices 30 percent across its entire MLCC portfolio effective Aug. 1, joining Murata and Taiyo Yuden in a broad repricing as AI server demand pushes monthly shipments to five-year highs.
"The AI server MLCC niche market is expected to maintain a CAGR of around 80 percent over the medium to long term," Goldman Sachs said in a note.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics posted Q2 revenue of 3.46 trillion won, up 24.2 percent year over year, with operating profit surging 106.7 percent to 440.4 billion won. The component unit generated 1.65 trillion won in revenue, up 29 percent, as AI data center and automotive MLCC demand accelerated. A single AI rack cabinet requires up to 440,000 high-end MLCCs — eight to 10 times a standard server.
The repricing marks a structural shift in the passive component market, with capacity locked into long-term agreements through 2027 and spot prices for short-supply models jumping two to three times. Chinese peers rallied Aug. 4, with CCTC (06951.HK) closing up 5.4 percent at HK$103.80.
Murata was first to move, raising prices 15 percent to 35 percent in late March for AI server and high-end automotive-grade MLCCs. Taiyo Yuden followed in April with increases of 10 percent to 30 percent on high-capacitance automotive items and 6 percent to 13 percent on consumer-grade specifications, then announced another round effective Sept. 1 citing rising costs for barium titanate powder, nickel powder, and rare earth additives.
Taiwanese makers joined the repricing. Yageo initiated broad capacitor price increases July 1, with industry sources reporting an overall hike of roughly 50 percent. Walsin Technology raised consumer MLCC prices 5 percent to 15 percent.
The price action has reached the spot market. Field visits by Shanghai Securities News to electronic component vendors in Huaqiangbei, Shenzhen found quotes for common low-capacitance MLCCs (0402 and 0603 packages) fluctuating sharply, with popular part numbers seeing "daily quote expirations and sharp spikes within two weeks." Spot prices for certain high-capacitance, AI-dedicated specifications have surged fastest.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics' order book shows the pricing power of original equipment manufacturers. By late July, its AI MLCC long-term agreement customer base expanded to more than 10 accounts, covering global hyperscalers and top fabless chip makers. In July alone, the company disclosed two AI server MLCC LTAs worth approximately 745 billion won, with delivery timelines locked through 2027.
High-end MLCC manufacturing requires dielectric film thicknesses under 1 micron, a process with high complexity and lower yields. Effective capacity per production line is only about one-tenth that of standard products. Global capacity expansion for high-end MLCCs requires 18 to 24 months, so short-term supply is constrained.
As Japanese and South Korean vendors prioritize LTA clients, freely floating market supply has tightened further. Monthly MLCC shipments from Murata, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, and Taiyo Yuden hit five-year highs in June, driven by AI platforms such as Google TPU and AWS Trainium. But the growth has flowed predominantly into the AI sector, with vendors converting consumer-grade X5R capacity toward high-end specifications like X6S and X7R. This has constrained supply for general-purpose MLCCs (1μF to 22μF), pushing channel inventory below the 30-day warning threshold.
Chinese MLCC-related stocks rallied Aug. 4 in response. BOJAY hit its daily upper limit, rising 10 percent. JPT closed up 12.6 percent, while BOQIAN NEW MATERIALS and YYFC each gained more than 9 percent. THREE-CIRCLE (GROUP) closed up 6.1 percent, and CCTC's H-shares rose 5.4 percent to HK$103.80 on turnover of HK$120 million.
For investors, the MLCC repricing is not a broad consumer electronics recovery — it is a structural adjustment driven by concentrated AI compute orders, long-term capacity lock-ins, and production line reallocations. Downstream AI hardware producers face rising component costs, while MLCC manufacturers with high-end capacity stand to expand margins. The 80 percent projected CAGR for AI server MLCCs suggests the pricing power of leading makers could persist well beyond this cycle.
