Micron Technology Inc. shares surged more than 6% to $790 after the company confirmed its supply of next-generation HBM4 memory is fully allocated through 2026, a direct result of voracious demand from artificial intelligence data centers. The stock's climb extends a remarkable bull run from a low of $64 in April of last year, cementing its position as a key beneficiary of the AI infrastructure boom.
"The fact that HBM4 is sold out two years in advance is a powerful indicator of the current AI-driven demand cycle," said Lee Kyoung-min, an analyst at Daishin Securities, commenting on the broader chip market rally. "Investors are rewarding companies with clear exposure to the AI supply chain."
The surge is tied directly to the market for High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM), a type of DRAM where chips are stacked vertically to create a wider, faster pipeline for data. This design is essential for feeding data-hungry AI processors like those from Nvidia. Micron, along with South Korean rivals SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics, are the three dominant producers of HBM. The entire supply of Micron's HBM4, its next-generation product, is already committed to customers through 2026.
This supply constraint highlights a critical bottleneck in the AI buildout, potentially limiting the pace of GPU deployments by giants like Nvidia, AMD, and major cloud providers. With HBM sold out far in advance, investors are now focused on whether chipmakers can accelerate complex production timelines. Success could mean capturing billions in revenue, while any delays could cede ground to competitors in a market where every major player is racing to expand capacity.
The intense demand for AI memory chips has ignited a rally across the semiconductor sector. On the same day as Micron's jump, its primary rival SK Hynix skyrocketed 11.51 percent to 1.88 million won, while Samsung Electronics soared 6.33 percent, according to data from the Korea Exchange. The moves helped push South Korea's KOSPI index to a record high, underscoring the global impact of the AI memory super-cycle.
This three-way race between Micron, SK Hynix, and Samsung will define the pace and cost of AI development. While Micron has secured its production line for the next two years, SK Hynix has also been aggressive, positioning itself as a key supplier to Nvidia. The competition is not just about volume but also about technological leadership, with each new generation of HBM offering significant leaps in memory bandwidth and power efficiency, critical metrics for data center operators.
The sell-out of a product that has not yet reached mass production is a highly unusual event that underscores the desperation of AI hardware makers to secure their supply chains. HBM is significantly more complex to manufacture than conventional DRAM, involving a process called through-silicon via (TSV) punching and advanced packaging techniques often handled by foundries like TSMC. This complexity limits the speed at which new capacity can be brought online.
For customers like Nvidia, a guaranteed supply of HBM is non-negotiable. The performance of its next-generation GPUs is directly tied to the speed and availability of the memory they are paired with. The HBM shortage has become the new limiting factor for AI growth, shifting the bottleneck away from the GPUs themselves and onto the memory that feeds them. The valuation of Micron is now heavily predicated on its ability to execute this HBM capacity expansion flawlessly.
