A chemical incident at a GKN Aerospace facility, owned by Melrose Industries PLC, prompted the evacuation of 50,000 residents in Garden Grove, California, amid fears a tank holding up to 7,000 gallons of a hazardous material could explode.
"It’s not over yet. We still have work to do," Orange County Fire Authority division chief Craig Covey said at a news conference. While the immediate risk of a catastrophic explosion has been eliminated, Covey noted, "we still have to mitigate a fire and very small explosion concern, and also a spill potential."
The situation began Thursday when a storage tank containing methyl methacrylate, a flammable liquid used in plastics production, began to overheat. Firefighters worked to cool the tank as its internal temperature reached 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.7 Celsius). By Monday, the temperature had fallen to 93 F (33.9 C) after a crack in the tank relieved pressure, allowing authorities to reduce the evacuation zone and permit about 34,000 residents to return home.
The incident threatens Melrose Industries with significant financial fallout from operational downtime at the key aerospace supplier, cleanup costs, and potential liabilities. The Garden Grove facility, which employs 540 people and manufactures cockpit windows for major aircraft, has a history of regulatory penalties, including a $900,000 settlement in 2025 with the South Coast Air Quality Management District for various violations.
GKN Aerospace is a critical node in the global aviation supply chain, with its website stating that its parts are used in 90% of passenger planes worldwide. The affected plant produces transparencies for the F-35 fighter jet and windows for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Any prolonged shutdown could create ripple effects for major aircraft manufacturers, according to Richard Aboulafia, managing director of AeroDynamic Advisory.
The disruption highlights the operational risks within Melrose's portfolio and could impact its long-term contracts in the aerospace sector. Investors will be watching for company disclosures on the estimated financial costs of the incident and any resulting regulatory actions. The timeline for the plant's full reopening has not yet been disclosed.
