Hunter Biden's LAPTOP memecoin opened at 5 cents on Base on Wednesday and printed $190.81 within two minutes, then traded at $3.70 less than an hour later — a 98% drop from the intraday peak that the project attributes to automated snipers rather than its own token distribution.
The team said initial liquidity was too small to absorb the rush of automated traders. "Everyone had the same information, at the same time," the project said in a Thursday blog post, adding that there was no presale and no allocations for investors, influencers or key opinion leaders.
The arithmetic behind the move is stark. Arkham put LAPTOP's fully diluted valuation at $144 billion minutes after the open while the pool backing it held $48,000. An hour in, CoinDesk recorded a price of $4.77, a circulating market cap near $1.6 billion on 350 million tokens, a fully diluted figure around $4.8 billion, and pooled liquidity of $2.5 million. First-hour volume across 314 pairs ran about $19 million, with an Aerodrome Slipstream USDC pool taking 46.8% of turnover and Uniswap v4 on Base most of the rest.
Nansen counted 46,675 buy transactions against 16,038 sells over 24 hours, from 20,085 unique buyers and 8,714 unique sellers. Most buyers have not sold. Among five wallets the analytics firm examined, one carried a roughly $199,000 total loss after realising $171,000 and holding another $27,900 unrealised; another that bought about 28,400 LAPTOP without selling was down roughly $118,000. A third, holding about 49,700 tokens, sat on about $13,000 of unrealised profit.
100 million tokens moved before the open
BaseScan records show a multisig Arkham tags as a Laptop Token wallet received 100 million LAPTOP — a tenth of the 1 billion supply — seven days before trading began and has since distributed about 42.5 million of it. Market maker GSR received 15.5 million tokens four days before the open through an intermediary address and has been distributing since, including transfers of 9 million, 1.5 million and 500,000 on Wednesday. Wintermute holds about 1.8 million in a hot wallet, and balances have appeared at Bitvavo, Kraken, KuCoin and Bitpanda deposit addresses. The largest single transfer, 14.5 million tokens, went to an unlabelled address roughly two hours before trading opened; neither Arkham nor BaseScan identifies the recipient. Each large transfer was preceded by a test send of 10 to a few hundred tokens.
Pre-launch allocations to market makers are standard, and LAPTOP's tokenomics set aside 20% of supply for liquidity and operations. CoinDesk contacted GSR for comment. Bubblemaps, which published the distribution chart before the launch, said 60% of top holders are wallets funded within the previous 10 days, most of them on launch day, and estimated that 80% of traders lost money — including two losses between $100,000 and $1 million and about 100 above $10,000. Lookonchain flagged one buyer who withdrew $250,000 from Binance, spent $200,000 on 919 tokens at $218, and held about $3,000 at the time of the post.
The bot explanation and the allocation data are not mutually exclusive. A $48,000 pool means a few thousand dollars of buying can move the quoted price by multiples, and the same shallowness lets automated sellers exit ahead of retail without any insider needing to dump. What the on-chain record does not yet show is a single dominant seller: the 42.5 million distributed tokens are spread across market-maker wallets, exchange deposit addresses and one unidentified recipient.
The TRUMP comparison cuts both ways
LAPTOP is named after the laptop Hunter Biden left at a Delaware repair shop in 2019, contents of which became a fixture of the 2020 election. He confirmed the token on X on Monday with the ticker and a montage of news anchors discussing it, and spent the day before launch defending the project. The launch drew public hostility from crypto traders who told him to call it off.
One of the 30 outcomes tied to LAPTOP's burn schedule is whether its market cap overtakes TRUMP's. It already has on paper: $1.6 billion against $615 million, and $4.8 billion against TRUMP's $2.26 billion fully diluted. TRUMP launched in January 2025, peaked near $73 and trades around $2.25, roughly 97% below its high, with nearly a million wallets down a combined $3.8 billion. LAPTOP has earmarked part of its 20% airdrop allocation for wallets underwater on that token.
The team said it will deploy another 4 million tokens, equal to 0.4% of total supply, to incentivise liquidity on Aerodrome pools from Sept. 10. That is the first measurable test of the bot-attack claim: if sniping was the cause, deeper pools should compress the launch range on any subsequent trading event. Nansen's post-crash marks — roughly $720 million market capitalisation and a $2.1 billion fully diluted valuation — flatter the token, because small trades in thin liquidity move the quoted price a long way.
