GoDaddy is betting on conversational AI to solve the complexity that keeps millions of small businesses from using the world's most popular website platform.
GoDaddy launched its Airo for WordPress AI assistant on May 11, aiming to capture a larger share of the small business market by simplifying website creation and management on a platform that powers over 40% of the web.
"Small businesses and agencies have long faced a tradeoff where website builders are easy but limiting, while WordPress is powerful but complex," said Bhala Dalvi, vice president of engineering at GoDaddy. "Airo for WordPress eliminates that by bringing the speed and simplicity of AI together with the flexibility and ownership of WordPress."
The new tool, integrated directly into the WordPress dashboard, allows users to generate a complete WooCommerce-ready storefront from a single conversation. GoDaddy claims this results in up to 2x faster performance, though it did not disclose the specific competitors or test conditions for the comparison. This follows a broader industry trend of embedding conversational AI into complex workflows, similar to ImageKit's recently launched DAM Agent for asset management.
The launch is a critical move for GoDaddy (NYSE: GDDY), a company with a $12.1 billion market cap whose stock has fallen over 50% in the past year. By bundling AI with its core hosting products, GoDaddy aims to reverse the trend and justify its full-year revenue guidance of over $5.2 billion.
Beyond Site Creation
Unlike many AI website builders that focus only on the initial setup, GoDaddy's Airo is designed to support the entire lifecycle of a site. The AI companion can be used with a single prompt to generate blog posts, update e-commerce product listings, and refresh webpage content. This continuous improvement model is intended to keep websites relevant long after launch, addressing a common pain point for time-strapped entrepreneurs.
The system offers dual editing paths, allowing users to switch between the AI assistant and the native WordPress editor. This flexibility ensures that web professionals are not locked out of the platform's deeper capabilities, which include access to more than 60,000 plugins and full data ownership.
A Bid to Reverse a 50% Stock Slump
The Airo launch is a direct response to investor pressure after a difficult year for GoDaddy's stock. Over the past 52 weeks, GDDY has shed over 50% of its value, starkly underperforming the S&P 500 Index, which gained nearly 31% in the same period. The company's stock is also trailing the broader Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK), which surged 61%.
Despite the stock's performance, the company's fundamentals show modest growth. GoDaddy's Q1 2026 revenue grew 6.1% year-over-year to $1.27 billion, and it has maintained its full-year revenue forecast of between $5.195 billion and $5.275 billion. Analysts expect its diluted EPS to rise 20.1% for the fiscal year to $7.17. The success of Airo will be a key factor for investors in determining if the company can achieve this growth and compete effectively in an increasingly AI-driven market.
