GM's retreat from its all-electric Cadillac vision shows the depth of the EV adoption gap in America's most profitable vehicle segment. The automaker on Tuesday confirmed plans for new gas-powered versions of the CT5 sedan, XT5 midsize SUV and the previously discontinued three-row XT6 SUV.
"Customers want choice, and we're responding to where the market is today," Mary Barra, chief executive officer of GM, said in a statement. The company had previously said Cadillac would exclusively sell electric vehicles by the end of this decade.
The reversal comes as GM's EV sales remain a fraction of its overall volume. The company sold 3,433 Chevrolet Bolts in the second quarter, up from 791 in the first quarter, according to Kelley Blue Book. But the Bolt — named 2026 EV of the Year by Car and Driver — is slated for only an 18-month production run at GM's Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas before being replaced by the gas-powered Equinox in 2027 and the next-generation Buick Envision in 2028, the Detroit Free Press reported. At current run rates, Bolt sales would reach roughly 28,800 vehicles over that period, compared with 64,322 in 2022.
The strategic backtrack carries significant financial implications. GM had invested billions in its Ultium battery platform, which underpins the Bolt and other EVs like the Cadillac Lyriq and GMC Hummer EV. Shifting capital back to internal combustion engine development risks delaying the cost reductions needed to make EVs profitable at scale.
The Bolt as a Laboratory
GM's Fairfax plant strategy offers a window into how the company is managing the transition. The factory builds Bolts in batches of 30 identical vehicles to reduce assembly line errors and speed production, according to Sean Tucker, managing editor at Kelley Blue Book. "They're using it to experiment with new methods of building," Tucker said. The approach suggests GM views the Bolt less as a long-term product and more as a manufacturing test bed for future EVs.
The Bolt's $28,995 starting price makes it the only EV priced around $30,000 built in the United States, according to Sam Abuelsamid, vice president of market research at Telemetry, who called the decision to end production after 18 months "stupid." Many similarly priced vehicles like the Chevrolet Trax and Buick Envista are built in South Korea, meaning GM is walking away from a uniquely positioned American-made affordable EV.
The Industry Reckoning
The Cadillac decision mirrors a broader industry shift. Volkswagen, once the proudest symbol of German industrial strength, said this month it would cut its model lineup by as much as half and shed up to 100,000 jobs as Chinese EV makers erode its market share. XPeng, a Chinese electric vehicle startup barely a decade old, is in talks to buy one of Volkswagen's underperforming European factories, according to the Financial Times. In the US, tariffs on Chinese EVs provide temporary shelter but do not address the structural cost and technology gaps.
For investors, the question is whether GM can execute both strategies simultaneously. The company must maintain its profitable ICE business — Cadillac's gas models generate high margins — while investing enough in EVs to avoid the fate of Volkswagen, which lost China, its largest market, in under five years. GM's China business is already under pressure: Buick sales have collapsed roughly 75 percent from their peak, and SAIC-GM is racing to electrify before its partnership expires.
