Ford is recalling up to 1.39 million F-150 pickup trucks due to a defect that can cause the transmission to unexpectedly downshift, potentially leading to a loss of vehicle control. The recall affects certain 2015 to 2017 models, the company said.
"A loss of signal between the transmission range sensor and the powertrain control module can cause the transmission to downshift into second gear," according to the recall notice.
Dealers will update the powertrain control module software to remedy the issue. Ford plans to mail initial owner notification letters on April 27, with a final remedy expected to be available in July. The F-150 is Ford's most profitable and best-selling vehicle line.
The recall of over one million vehicles is likely to result in significant costs for Ford and could damage the brand's reputation for quality and reliability. This could also affect consumer trust and future sales, putting pressure on Ford's stock price.
The financial impact of the recall will be a key focus for investors in the upcoming quarter. The next catalyst for Ford will be its Q1 earnings report, where the company may provide more details on the expected costs of the recall.
