(P1) Wall Street's central clearinghouse, the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC), will launch its tokenized securities platform with a pilot program for more than 50 firms in July, signaling a major step in Wall Street's adoption of blockchain technology.
(P2) "We believe tokenization will significantly change how markets work and operate, bringing new levels of liquidity, transparency and efficiency to investors," said Frank La Salla, DTCC President and CEO, in a statement.
(P3) The new service, built within DTCC's Depository Trust Company, will go live with a broader launch in October. The platform was developed with input from major financial players including BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, and JPMorgan. It will initially handle digital versions of Russell 1000 stocks, various ETFs, and U.S. Treasuries, operating under a no-action letter from the Securities and Exchange Commission.
(P4) The move from the DTCC, which custodies over $114 trillion in securities and processes trillions in daily trades, adds significant weight to the tokenization trend. It could accelerate the shift towards 24/7 markets, reduce settlement times, and cut costs for a wide range of traditional financial assets.
Wall Street's Broader Push
DTCC's initiative is part of a larger movement by traditional financial institutions to embrace blockchain. Both Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange's parent company, Intercontinental Exchange, are exploring tokenized stocks. Nasdaq is working on a framework for issuing blockchain-based shares, while ICE has backed a plan for tokenized stocks through a deal with crypto platform OKX.
These efforts reflect a race to build a unified infrastructure where stocks, bonds, and digital assets can trade seamlessly. By bringing tokenization to the heart of U.S. market infrastructure, the DTCC's platform represents one of the most concrete steps yet toward merging traditional finance with the efficiencies of blockchain technology.
