The US Dollar Index swung 1.2% intraday on July 30, touching 101.07 before sliding to 99.86 and closing at 100.01.
Data from NYB shows the dollar opened at 100.82, rallied to an intraday high of 101.07, then reversed to a low of 99.86 before settling at 100.01 — erasing an early gain of 0.3%.
The 1.20% amplitude marked one of the widest intraday ranges for the greenback in recent sessions. The index closed essentially flat from the prior day after giving back all its intraday advance.
The inability to hold above 101 highlights resistance at that level, while a break below 100 would mark a fresh psychological milestone for the dollar. Traders are now watching for the next catalyst that could determine whether the dollar breaks out of its recent range.
The session's price action left the dollar near the 100 mark, a level that has acted as both support and resistance in recent trading. The intraday swing of more than a full percentage point suggests elevated uncertainty among currency traders about the near-term direction of the world's primary reserve currency.
