China CITIC Bank has named a new president and vice president, creating a fresh leadership team to navigate industry-wide pressures and guide its next phase of growth.

China CITIC Bank Corp. Ltd. (601998.SH), a joint-stock commercial lender with assets over 10 trillion yuan, appointed veteran banker Lü Tiangui as its new president on May 20. The move completes a leadership overhaul that also includes the appointment of Shen Qiang as vice president, establishing the core “Fang-Lü partnership” with Chairman Fang Heying.
The bank’s board of directors announced the decision to appoint Lü Tiangui, 53, following a five-month vacancy in the president role after Lu Wei departed for Postal Savings Bank of China. Lü’s appointment is subject to regulatory approval, after which he will also serve as chief compliance officer and an executive director.
Lü, a 30-year finance veteran with deep roots in the Citic system, previously served as chairman of Citic Trust Co. Ltd. His career includes extensive experience across banking and trust businesses, having led Citic Bank’s credit card center, retail banking, and private banking departments before a stint as vice president. Shen Qiang, 52, brings a background in investment banking and international operations, currently serving as CEO of the bank’s international arm.
The new leadership team takes charge as the bank navigates significant industry-wide challenges, including sustained pressure on net interest margins and a push toward capital-light business models. Investors are closely watching how the new executive team will steer the bank’s strategy to sustain growth amid a complex macroeconomic environment.
Lü Tiangui’s career is marked by a wide range of experience across the financial sector, making him what the source material describes as a versatile "all-rounder." Holding a master's degree in business administration and the title of senior accountant, Lü has managed key business lines from credit cards to large-scale retail banking.
His transition to lead Citic Trust in early 2025 provided him with cross-market management experience outside of traditional commercial banking. This diverse background, which also includes roles as chairman of China CITIC Bank International and a director at China UnionPay, positions him with a broad perspective on the entire financial landscape as he takes the top executive role at the 10.24 trillion-yuan bank.
The "Fang-Lü" leadership structure is finalized at a time of significant change for China's banking sector. While China CITIC Bank reported stable first-quarter 2026 results, with net profit attributable to shareholders rising 3.02% year-over-year to 20.1 billion yuan and revenue growing 5.23% to 54.6 billion yuan, the broader industry faces headwinds.
The primary challenge is the compression of net interest margins (NIM), which affects the core profitability of lending. The new team, which also includes recently approved Vice President Zhao Yuanxin, will be tasked with accelerating the bank's transition to a "light-capital" model, focusing on fee-based income from wealth management and investment banking to offset pressure on interest income. How this new leadership team balances growth, risk management, and profitability will be a key focus for the market.
