Key Takeaways: Bitcoin's daily RSI at 85.99 marks most overbought reading since November 2024 after 22% weekly surge.

Bitcoin's daily RSI climbed to 85.99 on August 22, its most overbought reading since November 2024, after a 22% weekly rally lifted the asset to $77,037.
"A weekly close above the Bull Market Support Band is needed for more upside in Bitcoin," Ted Pillows, a technical analyst, said in an X post on August 22.
The rally began August 19, when BTC gained more than 7 percent to approximately $69,300. The following session added another 5 percent, pushing the asset above $73,000. By August 21, BTC had gained roughly 7 percent more, briefly testing levels not seen in months. The advance was driven by a cascading short squeeze that liquidated between $3 billion and $4 billion in leveraged short positions across major exchanges within days.
Values above 70 are generally considered overbought, while readings above 80 have historically preceded periods of consolidation or correction as buying momentum becomes stretched. The last time BTC's daily RSI exceeded 80 was November 2024, just before the asset entered a multi-week consolidation phase.
The macro backdrop supported the surge. The U.S. Treasury announced it would double long-bond buybacks to at least $4 billion per operation starting September 9, helping ease yields and boost risk assets. Spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $298 million in net inflows in a single session, and whale wallets absorbed roughly $2.9 billion worth of BTC after a 60-day selling period, according to on-chain data. Additional tailwinds came from renewed optimism around regulatory clarity after President Trump urged Congress to pass the Clarity Act on August 20, and from a meeting between Trump and crypto executives from Coinbase, Ripple, and Robinhood at the White House.
Key support sits in the mid-$70,000 range and around the reclaimed 200-day moving average near $69,000. A failure to hold recent gains could expose BTC to a pullback toward the $65,000 to $70,000 region that defined the previous trading range, while resistance looms between $78,000 and $80,000.
BTC is trading comfortably above its 200-week moving average near $64,300, indicating bulls remain in control of the long-term trend. The next key hurdle lies between $78,000 and $80,000, a major resistance zone. A breakout above this range could pave the way for further gains. However, losing the Bull Market Support Band — currently around $69,500, formed by the 20-week SMA and 21-week EMA — would weaken the bullish outlook and raise the risk of a pullback toward the $64,000 region.
Despite the strong rebound, Bitcoin remains well below its 52-week high near $126,000 and far from previous cycle peaks. The overbought RSI reading, combined with the stretched price action, suggests the market may need to consolidate before attempting another leg higher.
