Key Takeaways: Bitcoin's push toward $72,000 is being driven almost entirely by derivatives, with spot participation at record lows.

Bitcoin rose to $65,225 on Aug. 10, approaching $72,000 resistance as Binance futures volume outpaced spot by a record 7.82 times.
"This trend reflects a shift in market activity, with more investors and traders preferring to use futures for leverage, risk management, and short-term trading strategies," Arab Chain, contributing analyst at CryptoQuant, said.
Daily futures volume on Binance hit $57.82 billion this week, while spot trailed at $6.08 billion, according to CryptoQuant data. On a rolling 30-day basis, both spot and derivatives demand continue to deteriorate, with spot showing a more consistent decline since June. Ki Young Ju, CEO of CryptoQuant, said in a post on X that "Bitcoin spot demand is weakening. Futures demand remains net positive, but is significantly lower than during the rebound three months ago."
The divergence matters because a derivatives-led rally without spot confirmation risks unwinding quickly. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted $865.3 million in net inflows from Aug. 3-7, their best weekly performance since April, with BlackRock's IBIT accounting for $693.5 million. The July CPI report due Aug. 12 will be the next test — a softer-than-expected reading near 3.4 percent could push Bitcoin above the $65,500-$66,000 resistance band and toward the $72,000 zone.
Bitcoin has spent the past two months in a narrow range above $60,000, contributing to a lack of interest among spot traders. Traders initiated a major spike in onchain realized losses in February, when Bitcoin first dropped to the $60,000 mark. Subsequent retests have seen lower volume as both buyers and sellers have become exhausted.
Bitfinex Research flagged decaying volume across both spot and derivatives markets. "For now, volumes cluster in the middle of the range and thin out near the extremes. Taker volume especially is a sign that neither side is pushing hard to break the range in either direction," its analytics arm wrote in an update.
Options traders are positioned for rangebound conditions to continue in August, following a 7.4 percent gain for BTC in July. In September, they expect the range to resolve to the downside, following familiar Bitcoin bear-market behavioral patterns. "Options traders are effectively pricing in a continuation of the range and, on aggregate, hedging for a downside resolution of it several weeks from now," Bitfinex Research added alongside data from Glassnode.
Ethereum traded near $1,900, roughly flat over 24 hours, while Bitcoin dominance held at 58.9 percent. Stablecoin capitalization remained steady at about $287 billion, according to market data.
The $72,000 level represents the upper boundary of a multi-month consolidation range. A confirmed break above it would require spot volume to expand meaningfully — something that has been absent since June. Without that confirmation, the derivatives-driven rally remains vulnerable to a sharp reversal if leveraged positions unwind.
