Alphabet said Gemini 3.5 Pro, its next-generation AI model, will launch in June 2026, accelerating the release cadence as Google fights to defend its search business against OpenAI and Microsoft.
"Google now has the models, the distribution, the data advantage and a coherent platform vision to compete across every layer of the AI stack," Tim Bajarin, president of Creative Strategies, said. "The real question is execution."
Gemini 3.5 Pro follows the Gemini 3.5 Flash model Google announced in May, which can code and carry out other tasks while running in the search company's own data centers. The Pro tier typically offers stronger reasoning capabilities than the Flash variant, though Alphabet has not yet disclosed benchmark scores or pricing. The model will be integrated across Google's ecosystem, including Workspace, search, and cloud infrastructure, the company said.
The accelerated release schedule matters for investors because Google is racing to defend its more than $200 billion search business against AI-powered alternatives while competing in cloud infrastructure against Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services. Alphabet trades at roughly 22 times forward earnings, a discount to Microsoft's 30 times, as the market weighs whether Google can evolve search without undermining its core revenue engine.
The June launch positions Gemini 3.5 Pro against a crowded field. Microsoft at its Build conference this week introduced MAI-Code-1-Flash, its inaugural coding model, and MAI-Thinking-1, a reasoning model that the company said offers "high efficiency and performance at a low-token cost," according to Kyle Daigle, Microsoft's developer marketing chief and GitHub operating chief. Microsoft has invested $13 billion in OpenAI and $5 billion in Anthropic, but is now building its own models to run on Azure infrastructure and avoid paying third-party licensing fees.
Google's advantage lies in distribution and data. The company processes billions of search queries daily, creating a continuous feedback loop for training and refining its AI models — a scale advantage that few competitors can match, according to Creative Strategies' Bajarin. Gemini now works across Google's browser ecosystem and integrates with Workspace, the productivity suite used by hundreds of millions of people and businesses worldwide.
The Agentic AI Bet
Beyond individual model releases, Google is betting on agentic AI — systems that do not just answer questions but act on behalf of users across tasks and data types. At Google I/O 2026, the company demonstrated Android XR glasses developed with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster, showing that AI will eventually live on and around users. Every major platform vendor from Microsoft to Salesforce is building toward agentic functionality, and Google's announcements show it understands that companies setting the agentic standard today will define the productivity market for the next decade, Bajarin said.
For investors, the key question is whether Google can execute on its integrated strategy without cannibalizing search revenue. Alphabet shares have gained roughly 15 percent this year, trailing Microsoft's 22 percent advance, as the market prices in uncertainty about the transition. If Gemini 3.5 Pro drives meaningful adoption of Google's cloud and Workspace AI features, the stock's current valuation discount could narrow. If it fails to differentiate against OpenAI's GPT-5 and Microsoft's MAI models, the pressure on Alphabet's core business will only intensify.
