V4 Proposes Modular Hub-and-Spoke Architecture
Aave Labs has submitted an Aave Request for Comments (ARFC) to deploy its V4 protocol on the Ethereum mainnet, signaling a major architectural evolution for the leading DeFi lending market. At its core, V4 introduces a clean 'hub-and-spoke' model designed to enhance capital efficiency and streamline risk management. A central Hub will manage global liquidity and accounting, while specialized Spoke modules will handle distinct functions like borrowing, tokenization, and treasury operations. This modular design results in a smaller codebase than V3, which simplifies security audits and enables more flexible integrations for third-party developers.
Upgrade Undergoes $1.5M Security Program
The V4 protocol is supported by one of DeFi's most comprehensive security initiatives, backed by a $1.5 million budget approved by the Aave DAO. The year-long program, running from early 2025 to February 2026, delivered nearly 345 days of combined expert review. Audits were conducted by multiple top-tier firms, including Certora, ChainSecurity, and Trail of Bits. A six-week public security contest on the Sherlock platform attracted over 900 participants who submitted more than 950 findings. Notably, none of the issues discovered were of critical or high severity, and all were remediated before the final reports were published.
New App Targets Mainstream Adoption with 12,000 Bank Integrations
Complementing the protocol's backend enhancements, Aave Labs launched a new Aave App engineered for mainstream users. The application is designed to pass the "Fintech Test," meaning users should not need to understand blockchain technology to interact with it. The interface mimics familiar banking apps, abstracting away concepts like gas fees and transaction confirmations. Onboarding requires only an email or phone number, with direct deposit support from over 12,000 banks, aiming to lower the barrier to entry for everyday savers and accelerate DeFi's expansion into mainstream finance.
