Aave Labs Seeks $51.1M for DAO-Funded Model
A governance dispute has escalated within the Aave ecosystem as Aave Labs, the protocol's primary developer, defends a major funding request. The "Aave Will Win" framework proposes a transition to a DAO-funded operating model, requesting up to $42.5 million in stablecoins and 75,000 AAVE tokens, valued at approximately $51.1 million total. In return, Aave Labs has committed to routing 100% of revenue from Aave-branded products, including aave.com, directly to the Aave DAO treasury. The proposal also seeks community ratification of Aave V4 as the protocol's next major version.
In its own contributions report, Aave Labs highlighted its foundational role in building Aave V1, V2, and V3, and developing key revenue-generating features such as flash loans and the Safety Module. The firm argues that its extensive research, development, and security work underpins the protocol's success and justifies the proposed funding structure to ensure long-term growth and competitiveness.
ACI Report Challenges Funding with $86M Historical Figure
The Aave Chan Initiative (ACI), a service provider to the DAO, has directly challenged the funding proposal by publishing a detailed transparency report. Authored by ACI founder Marc Zeller, the report claims Aave Labs has received approximately $86 million in lifetime capitalization through its 2017 initial coin offering (ICO), venture capital funding, and previous DAO payments. The ACI argues for a more rigorous return-on-investment framework for all future DAO grants.
ACI's report calls for unbundling the governance vote to separate the funding request from the ratification of Aave V4, promoting greater accountability. Zeller insists that future funding should be tied to clear performance benchmarks and transparent reporting, a direct critique of the comprehensive nature of the current proposal. This public dissent from a key ecosystem participant has intensified scrutiny on Aave Labs' financial relationship with the DAO it helped create.
Vote Proceeds as Core Contributor Departs on April 1
The high-stakes governance vote is taking place as the Aave protocol faces a significant transition. BGD Labs, another core technical contributor, announced it will end its work with the DAO on April 1, increasing the pressure to secure a stable development team for Aave V4. The current off-chain Snapshot vote is a non-binding "Temp Check" designed to gauge community sentiment before a formal on-chain proposal is made. The outcome will be a crucial signal for the future of Aave's development and the financial accountability standards between the DAO and its core contributors.
