A Hyperliquid wallet that booked $27 million on a two-day TRUMP trade has taken the other side of Zcash, posting 2.19 million USDC in margin to short 5,200 ZEC at 3x leverage — $6.49 million of notional exposure with a forced-close level at $1,613.47, per on-chain data tracked by Lookonchain and Hypurrscan.
The wallet's history is the reason the trade is being watched rather than dismissed. "A single wallet holding $6.49 million of notional short interest with a published liquidation price is a structural feature of ZEC's order book, not a private opinion," Jason Wu, an on-chain analyst who tracks Hyperliquid perpetuals positioning, said. "The collateral size tells you the trader expects to be early, not wrong."
The mechanics are fully verifiable on-chain. The trader posted 2,190,000 USDC as margin against 5,200 ZEC of notional exposure at 3x leverage, a ratio that leaves roughly two-thirds of the position's value as cushion before a forced close. At $1,613.47, the entire 2.19 million USDC collateral is at risk. The gap between entry and that threshold implies a medium-duration thesis rather than a scalp, because the trader can absorb moderate ZEC volatility without being stopped out.
ZEC's recent tape is what makes the short legible. The token ran more than 50% in a week, from roughly $814 to a multi-year high near $1,257, and led the altcoin leverage build-up with perpetuals and futures open interest reaching about $2.4 billion at one point, according to Coinglass data cited in market recaps. Roughly $34 million of short positions were forcibly closed during that advance, evidence of a crowded, squeeze-prone book. A macro risk-off session — the ECB's 25 basis point hike, a hotter-than-expected US producer price print, rising oil and climbing bond yields — then knocked ZEC down 7.9% in a day, grouped with altcoins that lost more than 7%.
That combination cuts both ways for the whale. A continued decline validates the entry and pressures ZEC spot and derivatives sentiment further. A rally toward $1,613.47 forces the wallet to buy back 5,200 ZEC, and that buy lands on a book already thinned by prior short liquidations.
Where the squeeze level sits against the bid
The counterweight is visible in fund flows. The Zcash spot ETF, ZCSH, has recorded 11 consecutive days of net inflows, with the largest estimated daily inflow on the most recent session, according to ETF flow trackers. Grayscale's conversion of its Zcash trust into a spot ETF and a non-binding order for 200,000 ZEC from a DCG subsidiary preceded the rally. Buyers framing the dip as a falling knife have been absorbing supply, which is the mechanism that would have to fail for the whale's thesis to hold.
ZEC's liquidity profile raises the stakes on both sides. Relative to top-ten assets, Zcash trades thin enough that volatility compresses and expands spreads quickly, so a move through the lower Bollinger Band support near $1,196 opens the lower liquidity pockets that technical analysts flagged as the next downside target. The same thinness means an upside break accelerates faster than it would in a deeper book.
The single most useful signal is whether other wallets follow. One large short is a positioning event; multiple correlated shorts at similar levels on Hyperliquid would mark a broader shift in how the market is pricing ZEC. The position remains live and publicly trackable, and any change in size or collateral will show up on-chain before it shows up in price.
Zcash is also mid-vote on the scope of Network Upgrade 7, covering faster block times and the deprecation of older shielded pools. The governance process has produced no negative surprise in the recent session, and the shielded-pool vulnerabilities disclosed earlier were patched months ago. Neither is driving the current move.
The trade to watch is arithmetic: $6.49 million of notional short interest concentrated in one wallet, a $1,613.47 trigger, and a token whose open interest recently ran to $2.4 billion. If ZEC trades toward that level, the forced buy is 5,200 ZEC — and the wallet that made $27 million on TRUMP will have been wrong in public.
