Tesla reported record Q2 revenue of $28.24 billion, but operating income fell 57 percent to $398 million as automotive margins compressed.
Morgan Stanley said Tesla needs "clearer evidence of its Robotaxi program scaling to increase investor confidence," pointing to the gap between current earnings and the growth priced into the stock.
Earnings per share came in at $0.33, missing the $0.5367 consensus estimate, while operating margin narrowed to 1.4 percent. Free cash flow flipped to negative $1.09 billion as capital expenditures jumped 142 percent. Automotive sales contributed $20.0 billion of total revenue, with Energy at $3.14 billion and Services at $4.58 billion. Regulatory credits dropped to $146 million.
The stock trades at $332.81, down 26 percent year to date, at 304 times trailing earnings. Analyst consensus target stands at $396.62, with coverage split across six strong buys, 17 buys, 18 holds, four sells and two strong sells.
Deliveries hit a Q2 record of 480,126 vehicles, up 25 percent year over year, while energy storage deployments rose 41 percent. Services revenue expanded 50 percent, and active Full Self-Driving subscriptions reached 1.48 million, up 56 percent, with attach rates above 55 percent on new North American deliveries.
Robotaxi service is live in seven U.S. metros, and Cybercab production is starting at Gigafactory Texas. The company holds $43.5 billion in cash. An ongoing National Highway Traffic Safety Administration suspension probe adds regulatory uncertainty.
Polymarket traders assign a 14.5 percent probability to Optimus releasing by year end, reflecting skepticism about the robotics timeline. The stock has fallen 18.38 percent over the past month and 12.3 percent since the Q2 filing, while the S&P 500 rose 4.4 percent over the same stretch.
The record quarter shows Tesla can move volume, but the margin collapse and negative free cash flow mean growth is consuming capital faster than the core business generates it. Investors will watch Q3 operating margin, capex trajectory, and any robotaxi unit-economics disclosure for signs the 304-times-earnings multiple can hold.
