Bitcoin options traders cut near-term hedges to a five-week low as the Fed prepares a rate decision that could reset the macro outlook for risk assets.
Bitcoin's options open-interest put-call ratio fell to about 0.52 from 0.76 in late June, Glassnode data show, as traders reduced downside protection before the Fed's rate decision Wednesday.
"One-week implied volatility has compressed to 34.3%, while six-month contracts trade at 40.8%," according to Glassnode. The upward-sloping curve signals traders see the immediate period as calmer even as they hedge against turbulence later this year.
The 25-delta skew, measuring the premium for downside protection relative to equivalent upside exposure, dropped to about 4% at the one-week tenor while three- and six-month contracts hold at 11% to 12%. Large traders have accumulated $70,000 strike calls and bull call spreads, signaling expectations of upside in the spot price, the data show.
The positioning leaves limited cushion if Wednesday's decision or Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's press conference surprises investors. Fed funds futures price about a 15% chance of a quarter-point hike, though that probability rose to nearly 40% last week after Brent crude surged above $100 on US-Iran tensions before a diplomatic pause sent oil back toward $87.
Bitcoin traded at $65,148 as of 07:00 UTC, up 1.1% over 24 hours, with a market cap of $1.31 trillion and 24-hour volume of $20.96 billion, according to CoinGecko. The largest cryptocurrency reclaimed $65,000 Monday after dipping below $64,000 over the weekend.
The options unwind coincides with a rapidly shifting macro backdrop. The consumer price index fell 0.4% in June, the biggest monthly decline since April 2020, with annual inflation slowing to 3.5% from 4.2% in May. But last week's oil surge — Brent briefly topped $100 after Iran-backed Houthi attacks on Saudi tankers — injected new uncertainty into the inflation outlook before a US-Iran pause reversed some of the move.
A Thin Cushion for a Binary Event
The compression in short-dated options is atypical ahead of a scheduled central bank meeting, according to Glassnode. Thin positioning can amplify rather than absorb sharp moves if the outcome deviates from expectations.
Spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded more than $465 million in net outflows across Thursday and Friday, with BlackRock's IBIT losing $212 million on Friday alone, according to data tracked by the industry. Stablecoin transfers to exchanges have fallen to multi-month lows, CryptoQuant data show, signaling less immediately available capital for short-term buying.
A Fed hold paired with dovish guidance could give the relief rally more room to develop, potentially opening a path toward $67,000 and then $71,000, according to technical levels tracked by traders. A hike or hawkish hold could renew pressure, with immediate support at $63,800 to $64,000 and a break below that exposing $62,000 and $60,000.
Thursday brings the first estimate of second-quarter GDP and June personal income and spending data, including the Fed's preferred PCE inflation measure, giving markets a fresh read on the economy less than 24 hours after the policy decision.
