Applied Optoelectronics fell 12% to $109.94 after disclosing a $600 million at-the-market equity offering, its third large financing of 2026.
"Forecast demand continues to outpace our production capacity through mid-2027," Thompson Lin, chief executive officer at Applied Optoelectronics, said.
The company filed the offering with the SEC after Friday's close, with Raymond James and Needham acting as sales agents on commissions of up to 2 percent of gross proceeds. Applied Optoelectronics raised $1.05 billion through two earlier programs this year, selling 7.78 million shares through June, after completing a $500 million raise in April and establishing a $600 million ATM in May.
The dilution pressure spread across the optical sector. Lumentum Holdings fell 5 percent to $822.69 and Coherent dropped 5 percent to $273.68, while Corning slipped 3 percent to $145.90. The iShares Semiconductor ETF declined 2 percent to $511.95, versus a 0.6 percent dip in the Invesco QQQ Trust to $709.22, placing the selling squarely in the optical corner of tech rather than across broad semiconductors.
The offering follows record second-quarter results. Applied Optoelectronics posted revenue of $191.92 million, up 86.4 percent from a year earlier, with adjusted earnings of $0.06 a share topping the $0.015 consensus. Data center revenue reached $107.7 million, up 140 percent, and the company turned non-GAAP profitable for the first time since 2023, though it still reported a GAAP loss of $22.8 million.
Proceeds are earmarked for working capital, capital expenditures and debt repayment as the company expands 800G and 1.6-terabit capacity. Applied Optoelectronics invested $565.5 million in capital during the second quarter, including $280 million in prepayments on equipment on order, and held $508.8 million in cash and restricted cash at June 30.
The stock, up 258 percent year to date through Friday's close, carries a market capitalization of roughly $10.55 billion with 84.57 million shares outstanding, so the $600 million shelf equals about 5.7 percent of the share count. Retail positioning on Stocktwits shifted from neutral to bearish after the filing, with some investors questioning the timing of an announcement made after Friday's close.
The average analyst price target of $163.40 sits well above Monday's print, leaving the pace of ATM issuance as the key variable for the stock. Investors will watch for disclosure of any share sales under the program in coming weeks, and whether the offering is read as growth capital or a persistent equity overhang.
