Trump Media & Technology Group is abandoning its Bitcoin treasury strategy after recording $360.6 million in digital asset losses during the first half of 2026.
Trump Media & Technology Group reported $360.6 million in first-half digital asset losses, prompting the company to abandon its Bitcoin treasury strategy and refocus on core media operations.
"We made the disciplined choice to pivot in order to invest more time and resources in our most important initiatives," Kevin McGurn, chief executive officer of Trump Media, said on the company's earnings call.
The company's second-quarter net loss widened to $238.1 million from roughly $20 million a year earlier, while revenue rose to $1.7 million from $900,000, according to its latest results. Trump Media held 9,477 BTC valued at approximately $557.1 million as of June 30, then acquired another 4,661 BTC, bringing total holdings to about 14,139 BTC. The company ended the quarter with more than $400 million in cash and short-term holdings alongside roughly $1.2 billion in bitcoin and related digital assets.
The pivot comes as Bitcoin treasury companies face a broader shakeout. Strategy, the largest corporate Bitcoin holder with 840,447 BTC acquired at an average price of $75,482, reported a nearly $10 billion paper loss in the past quarter as Bitcoin trades near $63,000 — down from its all-time high of $126,000. Trump Media also carries $1 billion in convertible debt due in 2028, with lenders able to demand full cash repayment this November.
Trump Media's retreat is the latest sign that the corporate Bitcoin treasury playbook is breaking down. The company entered Bitcoin at nearly the peak of the market, when the cryptocurrency was rocketing toward its all-time high of $126,000. Within months, Bitcoin began a decline that has now lasted more than 10 months.
Strategy, the company formerly known as MicroStrategy, has been the most visible casualty. The firm that told investors "never sell your Bitcoin" is now selling, and its nearly $10 billion unrealized loss on 840,447 BTC has spooked the broader crypto market. If Strategy is ever forced to liquidate significant amounts of Bitcoin at once, it could trigger a historic market selloff, with losses potentially seeping into equity markets.
Some Bitcoin mining companies are also abandoning their holdings entirely, selling off reserves to fund artificial intelligence infrastructure projects. The pattern across the sector is consistent: companies that bought Bitcoin at high prices are now unwinding positions at a loss.
The core lesson from Trump Media's experience is that attempting to time the crypto market is futile. The company bought Bitcoin at nearly the exact moment the cryptocurrency peaked, and its strategy looked brilliant for a few months before the decline began.
For Trump Media, the pivot means returning to its roots. The company is now focusing on Truth API, a premium data service that provides institutional trading desks with rapid access to posts from influential Truth Social accounts, including President Donald Trump's. The service charges between $60,000 and $100,000 per month and has already signed up more than 10 institutional clients.
The company also plans to complete its proposed $6 billion all-stock merger with fusion-energy company TAE Technologies by the end of the fourth quarter. But with Bitcoin still on the balance sheet and convertible debt coming due, the path forward remains uncertain.
For crypto investors, the takeaway is straightforward: buying and holding through volatility has historically outperformed attempts to time entries and exits. Companies that chase Bitcoin at the top and sell at the bottom will always lose money.
