Verizon's existing dark fiber network, built during the DotCom era and largely unused for two decades, is now a high-margin revenue engine powering the AI infrastructure buildout.
Verizon Chief Executive Dan Schulman said the company struck a deal worth more than $1 billion with Alphabet Inc.'s Google to lease dark fiber capacity connecting Google's data centers, unlocking a new revenue stream tied directly to the AI boom.
"This is an industry-unlocking event — the dark fiber networks already exist, with little to no start-up costs," Schulman said during Verizon's Q2 2026 earnings call on July 24. Google will purchase the hardware to power the transmission while Verizon collects rent, he added.
The deal transforms stranded assets into recurring revenue. Verizon's dark fiber — leftover capacity from fiber laid during the DotCom boom — requires minimal capital expenditure to activate. The company expects to announce additional similar partnerships before year-end, with Schulman saying the combined deals will generate billions of dollars in revenue over the coming years.
Why dark fiber matters for AI
Hyperscalers like Google, Microsoft and Amazon are racing to secure long-haul fiber capacity as AI workloads demand massive data transfers between geographically distributed data centers. Training large language models requires moving petabytes of data across regions, and fiber networks — not just GPUs — have become a bottleneck.
Verizon's existing fiber footprint gives it an advantage over rivals that would need to build new networks from scratch. The company's Q2 results showed the strategy is gaining traction beyond the Google deal: free cash flow grew 16% in the first half of 2026, accelerating to 24% in the second quarter, as service revenue expanded and equipment subsidies declined.
The improved cash position supports Verizon's capital return program. The company lifted its annual buyback target to $4.5 billion, reducing share count by 1.35% over the trailing 12 months. Its dividend yields roughly 6%, more than three times the S&P 500 average.
Competitive implications
The deal positions Verizon as a direct beneficiary of the AI infrastructure cycle, a narrative typically reserved for chipmakers like Nvidia Corp. and data center operators. Ciena Corp., which supplies optical networking equipment, may also benefit as Verizon expands its fiber network, according to Needham & Co.
Rivals including AT&T Inc. and T-Mobile US Inc. lack comparable dark fiber inventories from the DotCom era, giving Verizon a structural cost advantage. The company's debt load — a key concern for analysts — could decline faster than anticipated as the new revenue stream flows through, potentially prompting sell-side upgrades.
Analysts rate Verizon a consensus Hold with 45% Buy-side bias, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The stock trades at roughly 9 times forward earnings, a discount to the S&P 500's 21 times, reflecting lingering concerns about the company's $150 billion debt pile. Higher free cash flow from the dark fiber deals could narrow that gap.
Verizon's Q2 revenue fell 0.7% year over year to $32.6 billion, missing consensus estimates, as equipment sales dropped 20% on reduced promotional activity. But operating margins improved, and the company raised its full-year earnings and cash flow guidance above analyst expectations.
Schulman said the company expects to close additional dark fiber agreements before the end of 2026, with the Google deal serving as a template. Each new partnership would add incremental high-margin revenue with minimal upfront investment, further strengthening Verizon's position as a landlord of the AI data highway.
