Palo Alto Networks shares have climbed 88.6% in three months, but rising integration costs and a premium valuation are testing whether the rally has room to run.

Palo Alto Networks shares have climbed 88.6% in three months, outpacing the Zacks Security industry's 66.6% gain, as enterprises consolidate security tools around AI-native platforms. The stock's run has left it trading at 24.75 times forward sales, a premium to the sector's 18.06 times.
The global cybersecurity market is projected to expand from $248.28 billion in 2026 to $699.39 billion by 2034, according to Fortune Business Insights, giving vendors like Palo Alto Networks a large addressable base as threats grow more sophisticated.
In fiscal third-quarter results, Palo Alto Networks' Secure Access Service Edge annual recurring revenue rose 40% year over year, its fastest-growing segment. The company closed an $80 million contract with a US power producer covering more than 25,000 employees, and reported nearly 50 displacement wins worth about $200 million in contract value year to date. It sold more than 11 million secure browser licenses in the quarter, a fourfold increase from a year earlier.
The rally has been built on strong demand, but costs are mounting. Acquisition-related expenses hit $113 million in the fiscal third quarter, up from $5 million in the prior quarter, and non-GAAP operating margin contracted 320 basis points sequentially. Palo Alto Networks reports fiscal fourth-quarter and full-year 2026 results on September 1.
Palo Alto Networks is benefiting from a shift among enterprises toward fewer, more integrated security vendors. Customers are moving away from older SASE products that lack a full view of networks, cloud workloads and remote users, a trend that has driven the company's platform-based deals. The Zacks Consensus Estimate points to revenue growth of about 23.8% in fiscal 2026 and 20.5% in fiscal 2027.
The platform approach is winning against point-product rivals. The company reported nearly 50 displacement wins in the fiscal year to date, taking over contracts from competitors as customers seek to cut the number of security tools they manage. Its secure browser offering, a newer product line, has become an entry point for expanding into existing accounts.
The company's net revenue retention stands at 120%, with near-zero churn among platformized clients, according to Simply Wall St analysis. That recurring-revenue base supports the premium multiple, though it also raises the bar for continued execution. Simply Wall St's narrative projects $17.9 billion in revenue and $2.6 billion in earnings by 2029, requiring roughly 19% annual revenue growth.
Palo Alto Networks has been absorbing back-to-back acquisitions, including CyberArk and Chronosphere, and the integration bill is rising. Non-GAAP operating expenses reached $1.46 billion in the fiscal third quarter, up from $1.19 billion in the prior quarter, with operating expenses as a share of revenue expanding 290 basis points sequentially.
The stock's valuation has stretched well beyond peers. Qualys trades at 7.22 times forward sales, Zscaler at 7.49 times and Check Point Software at 4.29 times, compared with Palo Alto Networks' 24.75 times. A discounted cash flow model from Simply Wall St puts intrinsic value near $311 a share, roughly 2.2% below the current price, suggesting the market has already priced in much of the growth story.
The premium reflects confidence in the AI security story, but it leaves little room for error. If the September 1 report shows integration costs weighing on margins longer than expected, the multiple could compress quickly. Conversely, a strong quarter with improving operating leverage could justify the valuation.
Palo Alto Networks carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Investors weighing the stock face a choice between a strong long-term growth story and near-term valuation and margin risk.
