Pokémon Pokopia has sold 5 million copies on Switch 2, lifting Nintendo shares 7 percent in Tokyo.

Nintendo shares closed 7 percent higher in Tokyo after Pokémon Pokopia surpassed 5 million units sold on Switch 2, just over four months after its March 5 launch.
"Pokémon Pokopia is being picked up by a broad range of players regardless of gender, and many are using the features, such as GameShare, that are exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2," Nintendo said in a joint statement with The Pokémon Company.
The 5 million units — combining physical Game Key Cards and digital downloads — represent roughly one in five Switch 2 owners, based on Nintendo's cumulative hardware sales of 23.68 million units as of June 30. The title sold 1.27 million units in the June quarter, the only first-party Switch 2 game to exceed 1 million shipments in the period. It ranks as the second-best-selling Switch 2 title, trailing Mario Kart World and ahead of Donkey Kong Bananza at 4.25 million units.
The milestone arrives as Nintendo prepares to raise Switch 2 prices in Western markets on September 1, driven by rising memory costs. The company forecasts 16.5 million Switch 2 console sales for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2027, a pace below the prior year's trajectory.
The game's opening was strong from the start — 2.2 million units in its first four days, including 1 million in Japan. Its cozy life-sim gameplay, drawing comparisons to Animal Crossing, has broadened the franchise's appeal beyond core Pokémon players. Nintendo has framed the title as a system seller, and the adoption rate of roughly 21 percent of the Switch 2 install base supports that positioning.
The June quarter figures show the game's durability. While Nintendo sold 3.82 million Switch 2 consoles in the quarter, down 34.4 percent year-on-year, Pokopia's 1.27 million units made it the only first-party Switch 2 title to cross the 1 million threshold in the period. By comparison, Kirby Air Riders has sold 1.76 million units since launch, while Donkey Kong Bananza has shifted 4.25 million.
The game's performance also places it among the best-selling Pokémon spin-offs of all time. According to sales data compiled by Serebii founder Joe Merrick, Pokopia already ranks as the fifth-best-selling game in that category, behind the Mystery Dungeon Red/Blue duo that leads the list.
Nintendo is treating Pokopia as a long-term platform rather than a one-off release. A free update has already added underwater exploration through a new Diving skill, which requires players to install the update and reach a certain level of progress. The paid Expansion Pass continues the rollout: part 2 arrives in late 2026, introducing wearable accessories for Pokémon, while part 3 is scheduled for 2027.
The stock's 7 percent gain on Friday follows a broader rally — Nintendo shares are up more than 26 percent over the past month as investors bet on an improving hardware outlook. The stock remains down more than 16 percent this year. The company's upcoming slate includes a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Switch 2 and two new Pokémon games slated for next year, which could sustain the momentum.
The timing of the sales milestone matters for Nintendo's financial trajectory. With the Switch 2 price increase taking effect in Western markets on September 1, software attach rates like Pokopia's become more important for the company's bottom line. Nintendo's fiscal year forecast of 16.5 million Switch 2 consoles implies a slowdown from the launch year, making hit titles essential to maintaining hardware demand.
