Metaplanet moved more than $480 million in Bitcoin to Coinbase Prime over five days, yet Bitcoin's price barely moved.

Metaplanet moved $480M in Bitcoin to Coinbase Prime over five days, with CEO Simon Gerovich confirming the transfers are custody arrangements, not preparation for liquidation.
"These are custody arrangements with zero intention of selling assets," Simon Gerovich, chief executive at Metaplanet, said.
The Tokyo-based company transferred approximately 2,400 BTC worth $186M on Aug. 25 and Aug. 28, followed by 3,000 BTC valued at $237M on Aug. 29. An additional 800 BTC deposit worth roughly $62.2M was documented by blockchain analytics provider Onchain Lens, bringing cumulative transfers above 3,200 BTC since late August.
Metaplanet's Bitcoin position totals approximately 43,000 BTC acquired at a combined cost of $4.09B, an average entry price near $96,191 per unit. The company is also developing Superplanet, a proposed US-based Bitcoin treasury initiative that would receive 2,100 BTC plus $2.5M in capital, with shareholder voting scheduled for Q4 2026.
Coinbase Prime operates as an institutional prime brokerage, providing custody, trade execution, and financing capabilities — fundamentally different from consumer-facing exchanges where large deposits often precede selling pressure. For corporations managing substantial Bitcoin reserves, the platform functions more like secure storage infrastructure than a liquidation venue.
Metaplanet has previously triggered similar on-chain speculation. Earlier in August, the organization relocated more than 5,000 BTC among its internal custody wallets. Gerovich characterized those movements as standard treasury management operations.
The accumulation strategy mirrors the MicroStrategy model: using equity offerings, convertible debt instruments, and operating revenues to build Bitcoin positions as core treasury holdings. Metaplanet has indicated plans to deploy its Bitcoin reserves in yield-generating strategies, including lending programs to support operational expenses. Coinbase Prime delivers these institutional financing capabilities, providing additional rationale for the recurring deposits.
Parallel to the custody transfers, Metaplanet continues developing a distinct strategic initiative. The corporation has proposed allocating 2,100 BTC alongside $2.5M in cash toward establishing Superplanet, a planned US-domiciled, Nasdaq-traded Bitcoin treasury company structured through collaboration with Super League Enterprises.
The proposed 2,100 BTC allocation would constitute approximately 4.9% of Metaplanet's existing Bitcoin position. The transaction requires shareholder authorization, with voting scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026.
Bitcoin's market valuation displayed negligible response to these transfers, with BTC holding near $79,000 as of Aug. 31, despite hundreds of millions in coins moving transparently across blockchain networks. The latest 800 BTC deposit valued at approximately $62.19M, verified by Onchain Lens, shows Metaplanet's consistent approach to institutional-grade Bitcoin treasury operations.
