Geely Automobile Holdings (0175.HK) founder Li Shufu will step down as chairman and executive director effective Aug 18, handing the top role to executive director An Conghui in a management reshuffle announced through the Hong Kong stock exchange.
The board described the move as an orderly succession aimed at aligning the group more closely with its controlling shareholder, the company said in a filing. Li, who remains a controlling shareholder, was appointed lifetime honorary chairman in a non-governance capacity. Independent directors pledged continued oversight of potential conflicts of interest as Geely refines its management authorization mechanisms and adjusts its senior ranks.
The restructuring extends beyond the chairman's seat. Li Donghui resigned as vice chairman but remains an executive director, while Gui Shengyue stepped down as chief executive to become vice chairman, retaining his executive director post. Gan Jiayue was appointed chief executive. Daniel Li also resigned as vice chairman, the company said.
Geely shares rose 4.77 percent, lifting the automaker's market capitalization to HK$193.3 billion, with the stock up 2.19 percent year to date. Analysts maintain a Buy rating with a HK$28.00 price target. The transition follows a first half in which core profit jumped even as reported earnings eased, and comes after the company raised RMB1.5 billion in onshore medium-term notes.
The succession places An Conghui, a veteran executive, at the helm of one of China's largest automakers as it competes with BYD and other domestic rivals in the electric vehicle market. Geely's controlling shareholder structure remains unchanged, with Li retaining his stake and influence over long-term strategy.
Investors will watch whether the new leadership accelerates Geely's EV strategy and its partnership talks with Volkswagen's JSW Group, which target a standalone joint venture for mass-market vehicles. The company's next earnings release will test whether the management transition translates into sustained profit growth in the competitive Chinese auto market.
