Key Takeaways:
- Flare Networks begins six-month integration phase to bring DeFi to the XRP Ledger
- FXRP issuance has exceeded 150 million tokens since the protocol's launch
- The protocol targets 5 billion XRP, or 5% of total supply, in the long term
Key Takeaways:

Flare Networks will begin rolling out smart contract infrastructure for the XRP Ledger within two weeks, kicking off a six-month phase aimed at unlocking DeFi utility for billions of dollars in dormant XRP.
"This is the start of large-scale integration that will transform the XRP-based decentralized finance ecosystem," Hugo Philion, co-founder and chief executive officer of Flare Networks, said in the announcement on July 26.
FXRP issuance has already surpassed 150 million tokens, with users converting XRP into the wrapped token at a 1-to-1 ratio via hot wallets to access staking, liquidity pools and on-chain lending. Philion expects the protocol to eventually attract as much as 5 billion XRP, representing roughly 5% of the coin's total circulating supply.
The roadmap faces several hurdles before it can meaningfully affect XRP's market price. Institutional players will need months to complete security audits of new bridges, and the ecosystem requires a large inflow of stablecoin liquidity — particularly USDT and USDC — before lending protocols can become fully operational, Flare's management has acknowledged in private sessions.
The XRP Ledger's DeFi Gap
The XRP Ledger was designed exclusively for fast payments and does not natively support smart contracts, leaving billions of dollars worth of XRP sitting in wallets without yield-generating utility. Flare's FAssets system addresses this by allowing users to mint FXRP, a fully collateralized wrapped token that can interact with DeFi protocols on Flare's network.
The team is also developing Confidential Compute technology, based on trusted execution environments, or TEEs, that will allow institutions to execute large trades and take out loans while keeping commercially sensitive information hidden from competitors. Transactions would remain fully and mathematically verifiable on the main network.
Macro Dependency Persists
Despite the technical progress, XRP's price continues to track broader macroeconomic trends and Bitcoin's movements rather than ecosystem-specific developments. Until the infrastructure challenges — including stablecoin liquidity and bridge security audits — are resolved, the token's market price is unlikely to decouple from macro forces, Philion indicated.
The six-month window outlined by Philion is a timeline for code deployment, while institutional adoption will require additional months of security verification. Flare's success ultimately depends on attracting sufficient stablecoin liquidity to make its lending protocols viable, a prerequisite the team has directly acknowledged.
