A $67 million Ethereum short by a London quant fund on a decentralized exchange shows institutional DeFi has crossed a credibility threshold.

Fasanara Capital amassed a $67 million short position on Ethereum via Hyperliquid, on-chain data shows, in a trade that reveals how institutional-grade capital now operates on decentralized venues.
Arkham Intelligence identified the wallet address 0x7fda..17d1 as belonging to Fasanara Capital, a London-based quantitative asset manager running systematic, multi-strategy books where relative pricing and funding rates matter more than directional calls. Nansen also linked the wallet to the firm, according to on-chain analytics reports.
The short sits on Hyperliquid, a decentralized perpetuals exchange that has processed roughly $11 billion in cumulative trading volume across ETH, BTC, AVAX, HYPE and other tokens — a profile consistent with institutional execution, not retail speculation. Supplementary on-chain attribution from Arkham points to an additional $41 million ETH short on the same venue, suggesting coordinated positioning across multiple regulated managers.
The trade matters beyond its direction. A short of this size can hedge spot ETH holdings, offset options book exposure, or form one leg of a basis trade — and its execution on a fully on-chain venue, visible to any explorer, marks a structural shift in where professional capital is willing to trade. Just two years ago, executing a complex, multi-leg derivatives strategy of this size on a decentralized platform would have looked implausible.
The instinctive read — large ETH short, therefore bearish signal — does not survive contact with how quantitative funds operate. In a market where funding rates and open interest are already elevated, a large institutional short can function as a structural offset rather than a conviction trade. Fasanara's systematic approach means this position could be one component of a market-neutral spread, a hedge against a larger long book, or an offset against options exposure elsewhere in the portfolio.
The current leverage environment on Ethereum gives that short context. When funding rates are already elevated, a short of this size can capture funding payments while maintaining delta neutrality — a common strategy among systematic funds that has nothing to do with a directional view on ETH.
The Hyperliquid trade comes as Ethereum strengthens its role as the primary settlement layer for tokenized financial products. Token Terminal data shows the network recorded the highest absolute capital inflows into tokenized exchange-traded funds over the past year, capturing roughly 70 percent of the $475 million in tokenized ETF issuances on-chain. While the global ETF market exceeds $20 trillion, only a fraction has migrated on-chain so far.
Major institutions including BlackRock, JPMorgan and Franklin Templeton have issued products on Ethereum, using its security and composability for money market funds and Treasuries. BlackRock's BUIDL fund, JPMorgan's on-chain repo platform and Franklin Templeton's money market fund all run on Ethereum, creating a self-reinforcing cycle of liquidity and institutional familiarity.
For the DeFi sector, the Fasanara trade confirms what on-chain data has been showing for months: decentralized venues can now handle institutional size, execution quality and liquidity depth that professional traders previously expected only from centralized exchanges. The next question is whether other quant funds follow suit, and how quickly — a development that would accelerate the convergence of traditional finance and decentralized markets.
