A Bitcoin wallet dormant for four years transferred 730 BTC, about $46 million, on Aug. 3, as the token held near $63,000 and traders weighed whether long-idle coins would reach an exchange.
The movement of coins held since before the 2022 bear market draws scrutiny because large-holder behavior can shift liquidity and sentiment. If the funds land on a trading platform, they could add sell pressure; if they move to cold storage, the transfer may reflect repositioning or security upgrades rather than intent to liquidate. Dormant-whale activations have historically preceded both outcomes, leaving the market to parse wallet destinations in the coming sessions.
Bitcoin traded at $63,125 at the Asian session open (01:00 UTC), up about 0.3 percent over 24 hours, according to CoinGecko data. Immediate support sits at $62,900-$63,000, followed by $62,000, while resistance is visible near $63,700-$64,000, with the stronger $65,100-$66,700 region the next major hurdle, said Vikram Subburaj, chief executive at crypto exchange Giottus. On-chain conditions point to cautious consolidation: exchange liquidity has contracted, aggressive selling has moderated, and long-term holders have largely retained their Bitcoin, though active addresses and capital inflows remain subdued.
The whale transfer lands against a backdrop of inconsistent institutional flows. US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded a net outflow of roughly $61.5 million for the week ending July 31, after a $265.4 million withdrawal on the final day of the month reversed earlier inflows, per Giottus. Bitcoin dominance near 58.5 percent indicates selective participation rather than a broad altcoin rally, while the Coinbase Premium Index has stayed negative for a record 76 consecutive days, reflecting subdued US spot demand, according to Akshat Siddhant, lead quant analyst at Mudrex. Ethereum traded at $1,866, up 0.64 percent, as large-cap altcoins posted modest gains.
The dormant-wallet activation adds to a cautious August, historically Bitcoin's weakest month with a median return of minus 6.99 percent, per Mudrex. A sustained move above $63,500 could strengthen momentum toward $64,000-$64,300, while a break below $63,000 may expose $62,500-$62,600, with the 200-week moving average near $62,800 remaining critical support. Traders are watching this week's US manufacturing, job-openings and services data ahead of the Aug. 7 employment report, where economists expect payroll growth of about 83,000, which could shape the Federal Reserve's path and, in turn, risk-asset demand.
