"Robots are already going to dominate most traffic on the internet," Lee, co-founder of Fundstrat and chairman of BitMine Immersion Technologies, said during his June keynote. He argued that autonomous AI agents transacting at scale need a settlement layer that doesn't require human compliance officers approving every wire transfer.
The call implies a roughly 50x gain from current levels. Lee pointed to a July 21 data point where ETH surged 24 percent while the Roundhill Memory ETF, which tracks AI-adjacent semiconductor and memory stocks, dropped 38 percent — a 62-percentage-point divergence between two assets often lumped into the same AI trade. BitMine, the company Lee chairs, has been accumulating ETH through multi-million-dollar purchases, aligning its treasury strategy with his public thesis.
Lee's argument rests on Ethereum's network effects — the largest developer ecosystem, deepest DeFi liquidity, and Wall Street's preference for its tokenization rails. If trillions in real-world assets migrate on-chain, the settlement layer processing those transactions captures enormous value. Ethereum's proof-of-stake transition, completed in September 2022, addressed energy-efficiency concerns that had blocked institutional participation.
The machine economy thesis
Lee's case for Ethereum over competitors such as Solana hinges on infrastructure maturity. For AI agents that need to interact with a wide variety of smart contracts and tokenized assets, going where the ecosystem already exists matters more than chasing marginally faster block times on a chain with a fraction of the developer base. Smart contracts running on a proof-of-stake blockchain can settle transactions in seconds, verify identity programmatically, and operate around the clock without human intervention.
Wall Street firms exploring tokenization have overwhelmingly gravitated toward Ethereum and its Layer 2 ecosystem. If Lee's prediction about a supercycle driven by institutional tokenization proves correct, Ethereum's first-mover advantage in attracting traditional finance participants could compound over time.
The endorsement carries weight beyond the conference stage. BitMine's treasury accumulation means a public company is putting capital behind the thesis, not just words. The divergence between ETH and AI-adjacent equities on July 21 also suggests the market is beginning to price Ethereum as a distinct AI infrastructure play rather than a correlated tech trade.
For the broader crypto market, Lee's call adds to a growing narrative that AI and blockchain are converging. If autonomous agents become the dominant internet traffic source, the settlement layer they use becomes critical infrastructure — and Ethereum's position as the default choice for tokenization and smart contracts puts it at the center of that convergence.
