Tencent Holdings (0700.HK) sharply increased computing power procurement in the third quarter, aiming to convert AI application and model usage into revenue, the company's earnings report shows.
The AI buildout is a long-term strategic investment that temporarily weighs on profitability, JPMorgan analysts said, maintaining an Overweight rating with a HK$690 price target. Morgan Stanley and Bank of America also hold Overweight ratings, with targets of HK$650 and HK$780 respectively, while Nomura set a HK$727 target.
Marketing services revenue continued to grow, several new games performed well, and WeChat Video Account playback volume rose rapidly, according to the report. Wall Street expects second-quarter revenue of RMB 202.458 billion, up 9.73 percent year over year, with earnings per share of RMB 6.259, a 4.38 percent increase. Gaming revenue is seen near RMB 65 billion, up about 10 percent, while advertising is forecast to climb 18-20 percent and fintech and business services about RMB 60 billion, up 8-9 percent. In the first quarter, total revenue grew 9.1 percent year over year and adjusted net profit rose 11 percent, with gaming and advertising both resilient.
The investment push carries a cost. Daiwa raised its 2026 capital expenditure forecast for Tencent to RMB 181 billion from RMB 108 billion, while Bank of America sees RMB 185 billion and JPMorgan projects the figure could approach RMB 200 billion. That would cut free cash flow from more than RMB 200 billion in 2025 to less than RMB 70 billion this year. Tencent shares traded at HKD 470.80, down 2.2 percent on the day and 25.5 percent year to date, at a forward price-to-earnings multiple of 13.5 times. The US-listed ADR (TCEHY) closed at $59.51, down 3.27 percent.
The spending shows management expects AI demand to accelerate and monetize through advertising, cloud, and enterprise services, with the HunYuan large model and WeChat AI agents central to the plan. Investors will watch the second-quarter earnings call on August 12 for updated capital expenditure guidance and evidence that AI investments are generating incremental returns.
