Solana processed 1.01 billion transactions in the week ending Aug. 2, a record, as network upgrades and tokenized gold growth drive on-chain activity.
The transaction count, spanning July 27 through Aug. 2, marks the first time Solana has crossed the billion-transaction weekly threshold, according to network data compiled by AMBCrypto.
Two network upgrades are driving the throughput gains. The deflationary upgrade has entered its final voting stage, while SIMD-0525 went live on testnet, cutting slot time from 400 milliseconds to 350 milliseconds as the first step toward a 200-millisecond target. Separately, Solana's tokenized gold market cap has grown 689.1 percent since August 2025, averaging 18.8 percent month-over-month growth — more than double BNB Chain's year-over-year growth and roughly 4.6 times the growth on Avalanche and Ethereum.
The tokenized gold expansion coincides with spot gold prices climbing above $4,200 per ounce, their highest level since June 2022. If the gold rally extends, fresh demand for tokenized gold on Solana could further strengthen on-chain activity and provide a fundamental tailwind for SOL heading into Q4.
The deflationary upgrade, now in its final voting stage, aims to reduce SOL's inflation rate over time. SIMD-0525, live on testnet, is the first of four planned 50-millisecond reductions under the proposal, with a target of halving slot duration to 200 milliseconds.
These upgrades are supporting record transaction throughput as on-chain activity scales. Sustained transaction growth reinforces Solana's core strengths — high transactions per second, low-latency finality, and the network's ability to process more activity.
Oro Finance launched its $GOLD token in September 2025, offering holders an annual yield of three to four percent through institutional leasing arrangements. Matrixdock entered the Solana ecosystem in February 2026 with XAUm, a token backed by LBMA-certified gold. Streamex rounds out the trio with similar yield-bearing features.
The broader tokenized gold market has been expanding rapidly, with total market capitalization approaching $4.8 billion to $6 billion across gold and silver assets. Sector-wide trading volume hit $90.7 billion in Q1 2026 alone. Within that boom, Solana recorded an average quarterly growth rate of 213.2 percent through the first half of 2026, vastly outpacing the average across all chains.
Solana's tokenized gold products are built to plug into DeFi protocols as collateral, liquidity pool assets, and yield-generating instruments.
Despite the network milestones, SOL's price has been subdued. The token is up just over 1.8 percent so far in August, lagging Cardano's 11 percent gain over the same period. SOL trades around $74, struggling to break key resistance levels near $75 to $76.
This disconnect between network fundamentals and market valuation has investors watching for a specific event that could align price with the strong on-chain activity. The upcoming Agave 4.2 upgrades aim to reduce costs and improve speed, potentially boosting developer and user engagement. A governance proposal to accelerate token disinflation could also tighten supply.
The tokenized gold growth carries risks. A three to four percent annual yield on gold involves counterparty risk embedded in institutional leasing arrangements. If institutions borrowing that gold run into trouble, token holders could face losses that a simple spot gold position would avoid. There's also concentration risk — three primary protocols serving an entire chain's gold market means any smart contract vulnerability or custody failure at one project could shake confidence across the sector.
The combination of record transaction throughput and tokenized gold leadership positions Solana as a key infrastructure layer for real-world asset tokenization. As gold prices continue to climb and the RWA sector expands, Solana's growth advantage in tokenized gold could translate into sustained on-chain activity and, eventually, price appreciation for SOL.
