OpenAI's AI agent products — Codex and ChatGPT Work — reached a combined 10 million users, nearly doubling in two weeks after the ChatGPT Work launch.

OpenAI said its two AI agent products — Codex for coding and ChatGPT Work for multi-step tasks — reached a combined 10 million users, nearly doubling from earlier this month after the July 9 launch of ChatGPT Work.
"The fastest-growing cohort is non-developers — knowledge workers who never open a terminal," Tibo Sottiaux, Codex lead at OpenAI, said in a public post tracking the milestone.
Codex alone had passed 5 million weekly active users by early June, OpenAI disclosed at the time. The combined base hit 6 million on July 12, then climbed past 8 million by mid-month, according to figures Sottiaux posted as each threshold fell. The accelerant was GPT-5.6, the model family OpenAI released alongside ChatGPT Work, with its flagship Sol tier tuned for coding and long-running tasks. OpenAI also reset usage limits for all subscribers and kept the five-hour rate cap off for Plus, Business, and Pro plans, pulling lapsed users back into active sessions.
The milestone matters less as a measure of durable adoption than as a signal of direction. OpenAI is racing Anthropic, whose Claude Cowork and Fable 5 model target the same enterprise buyers, and the company faces a widening gap between its $852 billion valuation and its path to profitability. With 95% of ChatGPT's 900 million weekly users still on free plans, converting even a fraction into paying agent users is central to OpenAI's revenue strategy ahead of a widely expected public listing.
The composition of the growth is the part OpenAI most wants noticed. Roughly one in five Codex users now applies the tool to work outside software development — drafting documents, building spreadsheets, and assembling presentations — up from a negligible share earlier this year. That shift is the entire rationale for ChatGPT Work: taking an agent built to write code and repositioning it as software that finishes jobs for finance, sales, and operations teams.
Zapier, RingCentral, Virgin Atlantic, and Nvidia were named at launch as early ChatGPT Work customers. Finance teams are using the tool to speed up month-end reporting and forecasting by automating data pulls, reconciliation, and presentation building, OpenAI said.
The Competitive Landscape Heats Up
Anthropic responded within hours of OpenAI's milestone posts by extending promotional pricing on its Fable 5 model and raising Claude Code's weekly usage limits by half — a mirror-image retention play. Google also entered the fray with Gemini Spark, an always-on assistant that takes instructions through Gmail, announced at its I/O conference in May.
The three-way contest for enterprise AI budgets is intensifying as each company tries to prove its agents can be trusted with real work. OpenAI has leaned on GPT-5.6's safety testing as a selling point to enterprise and government buyers wary of agent autonomy, while Anthropic has emphasized Claude's longer context windows and lower hallucination rates.
What the Number Doesn't Say
The 10 million figure is a combined tally of active users across Codex and ChatGPT Work, with no breakdown between the two products. OpenAI has not specified whether "active" means daily, weekly, or a point-in-time snapshot, and the metric was collected during a heavily promoted launch window with free usage resets — conditions that inflate any active-user count. Independent evaluations of these agents on real tasks remain thin, and the benchmark numbers OpenAI cites for GPT-5.6 are vendor-reported.
For investors weighing which AI platform to bet on, the usage curve demonstrates traction but not superiority. OpenAI's business revenue has doubled to about 40% of total revenue since CFO Sarah Friar joined in 2024, she told The Associated Press in April. But the company is still losing money, while Anthropic teased its first operating profit in the second quarter of 2026, according to The Wall Street Journal. The 10 million user milestone is the loudest number OpenAI has to offer right now — which is exactly why it is worth reading with the definition attached.
