NVIDIA's Alpamayo 2 Super, the frontier open-reasoning model for autonomous vehicles, is now available for commercial deployment.
NVIDIA opened Alpamayo 2 Super for commercial use Tuesday, releasing its frontier open-reasoning model for autonomous vehicles under a permissive license that tops the LingoQA driving benchmark by 17 points over Qwen2.5-VL 72B.
"The next wave of AI is robotics — and it starts with autonomous vehicles," Jensen Huang, NVIDIA's chief executive, wrote on X. The model is built on NVIDIA Cosmos 3 Super Reasoner and post-trained with reinforcement learning.
Alpamayo 2 Super offers 3x the scale of the 10-billion-parameter Alpamayo 1.5 and Alpamayo 1 models, and ranks first on LingoQA among nearly 40 models evaluated. In NVIDIA testing using the Lingo-Judge metric, it outperformed Gemini 2.5 Pro by 15.1 points and GPT-4o by 23.2 points. The model reasons over full-surround camera coverage, fusing views from the vehicle's front, sides and rear for richer understanding of lane changes, merges and complex intersections.
The commercial release extends NVIDIA's footprint in the autonomous driving AI stack, where the company competes with Tesla's in-house FSD software and Waymo's robotaxi platform. Alpamayo has surpassed 500,000 downloads on Hugging Face, making it the most-adopted open reasoning model family for autonomous driving on the platform.
OpenMDW-1.1 License Covers Fine-Tuning and Commercial Redistribution
The OpenMDW-1.1 license, issued by the Linux Foundation, covers fine-tuning, derivative models and commercial redistribution. That allows AV developers, automakers, truckmakers and suppliers to adapt Alpamayo to their own data, driving policies and deployment strategies. Earlier Alpamayo releases were initially introduced for research and development; the license is now applied across the entire model family.
Open weights make the path from adaptation to deployment economically viable, NVIDIA said. Teams can build on advanced reasoning without re-training every foundation capability from scratch or paying frontier-model costs for every task. Alpamayo 2 Super delivers the highest reasoning and driving performance for multimodal autonomous driving development, while Alpamayo 1.5 and Alpamayo 1 provide more cost-efficient options for cloud-based development and model distillation.
The resulting distilled models can be optimized for real-time inference in production vehicles, creating a cloud-to-car workflow that combines frontier-scale reasoning with scalable deployment across commercial AV fleets.
Five Coupled Outputs Link Reasoning to Action
For each driving situation, Alpamayo 2 Super produces five tightly coupled outputs: a trajectory describing the vehicle's planned path, a chain-of-causation trace explaining the reasoning behind the decision, a meta-action capturing the model's intent, reasoning auto-labels for training data, and visual question answering responses with 2D visual grounding that link answers to specific regions in camera images.
Chain-of-causation traces integrate with NVIDIA Halos safety-validation workflows and support AI safety aligned with ISO/PAS 8800 requirements. The model can also be deployed as an autolabeler, transforming raw driving clips into richer training data and compressing annotation cycles from months to days.
Beyond planning and auto-labeling, Alpamayo 2 Super supports scene understanding, model critiquing and knowledge distillation. Other tools in the family include NVIDIA AlpaSim for closed-loop simulation, AlpaGym for high-throughput reinforcement learning, and NVIDIA Physical AI Open Datasets for training and testing.
The open licensing strategy follows NVIDIA's broader push to expand its total addressable market beyond data center GPUs into physical AI and robotics. By making Alpamayo commercially available, NVIDIA gives AV developers a path to deploy frontier-scale reasoning in the cloud and efficient, specialized models in the vehicle — a workflow that could accelerate robotaxi production timelines and strengthen NVIDIA's position in the autonomous driving software market.
