IREN's 2GW Sweetwater Hub has been conditionally classified as Base Load in ERCOT's Batch Zero interconnection process, placing the West Texas AI data center complex ahead of more than 438,000 MW of competing large-load requests queued with the Texas grid operator.
The designation treats the project as credible demand rather than speculative capacity, a distinction that matters as ERCOT works through a backlog where nearly 90 percent of requests come from data centers. "This is proof that the Soluna model works," John Belizaire, CEO of Soluna Holdings, said after his company's 166 MW Kati campus received the same conditional classification. "We build where the power already is and we bring generation with us, and ERCOT's framework recognizes exactly that."
Sweetwater 1 accounts for 1,400 MW of the hub's total capacity, with Sweetwater 2 adding 600 MW. The company's high-voltage substation at Sweetwater 1 was energized May 1, unlocking construction of 300 MW of gross data center capacity with delivery targeted for Q4 2027. The hub forms part of IREN's broader development pipeline exceeding 5 GW across North America, Europe and APAC.
The classification remains conditional, subject to ERCOT's ongoing verification process. Texas Governor Greg Abbott directed regulators Aug. 3 to audit data centers advancing through interconnection, and ERCOT delayed issuing conditional classifications beyond Aug. 31 to complete data validation. IREN's annual filing warns that changes to ERCOT procedures could delay energization or alter permitted power levels at its Texas projects.
Batch Zero compresses interconnection timelines
ERCOT adopted Batch Zero after the Public Utility Commission of Texas approved revised interconnection protocols in June, replacing a project-by-project review that had become unwieldy under the weight of AI-driven demand. The framework groups qualifying projects of at least 75 MW into a single assessment, letting ERCOT evaluate their combined grid impact and identify required transmission upgrades in one pass.
Base Load classification means a project's interconnection capacity is preserved based on prior study work, and the project is not subject to further reliability evaluation or megawatt allocation within the Batch Zero study. For IREN, that removes a layer of uncertainty from a construction schedule that already has a public benchmark: 300 MW online by Q4 2027.
The company said additional large-scale projects in its pipeline were also included in Batch Zero but did not identify their locations or capacities. IREN plans to add them to its announced portfolio after executing the relevant grid connection agreements.
Competitive race for Texas grid capacity
IREN is not alone in seeking ERCOT interconnection. Soluna Holdings completed its 83 MW Kati 1 site in Willacy County and secured conditional Base Load for the full 166 MW campus, including a planned AI expansion. The company operates approximately 206 MW of total capacity and carries a development pipeline of roughly 6.3 GW.
The scramble reflects a structural shift in Texas power markets. ERCOT's queue had swelled past 438,000 MW of large-load requests by mid-2026, with data centers accounting for nearly all of the growth. Projects that secure Base Load classification effectively skip ahead of speculative filings, compressing interconnection timelines that had stretched for years.
IREN shares trade on Nasdaq under the ticker IREN. The company, which pivoted from Bitcoin mining into AI cloud services and data center development, has not disclosed the capital expenditure tied to the Sweetwater Hub's initial 300 MW phase. The Q4 2027 delivery target for that first tranche will serve as the market's clearest check on whether the Batch Zero designation translates into on-time energization.
