Ethereum held at $1,882.06 as of 01:00 UTC on Aug. 12, supported by whale accumulation from Tom Lee's BitMine and month-to-date ETF inflows.
Whale accumulation led by BitMine has persisted through the recent pullback, according to on-chain data, with the fund's buying helping to keep ether above key support levels.
Spot ether ETFs recorded $49.6 million in net inflows on Aug. 7, while the category drew roughly $245 million over the week ended Aug. 8, according to SoSoValue. Fidelity's Fidelity Ethereum Fund, with $898 million in net assets, is preparing to add staking and quarterly cash payouts, joining Grayscale and 21Shares in offering yield on existing products.
If ether breaks above $1,950, the token could target $2,500 in the near term. The move would hinge on sustained ETF inflows and a benign U.S. inflation print, with July CPI due Aug. 12 expected to show a 0.1 percent monthly rise.
Ether has traded in a tight range over recent weeks, mirroring bitcoin's $62,000-$66,000 band, as crypto trading volume fell to a three-year low. Bitcoin held at $63,497.90 as of 01:00 UTC, with ETF inflows offsetting selling by miners and corporate holders.
The accumulation by BitMine, the fund co-founded by Fundstrat's Tom Lee, comes as institutional demand for regulated ether exposure strengthens. BlackRock's iShares Ethereum Trust and Fidelity's FETH have captured the bulk of inflows, with the concentration favoring the largest and most established products.
Fidelity's staking plan, disclosed in an amended registration statement, would keep 85 percent of gross staking rewards, with the remaining 15 percent going to service providers including Blockdaemon, Figment and Galaxy. Net staking rewards would first cover fund expenses, then fund quarterly cash distributions, per IRS rules issued in November 2025.
The staking addition follows an IRS safe harbor bulletin that lets qualifying crypto trusts stake assets without losing grantor-trust tax status. BlackRock took a different route, launching a separate staking product rather than amending its existing ether fund.
The combination of whale accumulation, steady ETF inflows and new yield mechanisms gives ether a firmer footing than earlier in the year, when outflows and regulatory uncertainty weighed on the token. A decisive break above $1,950 would mark the first sustained move higher since ether slipped below that level in late July, setting up a test of the $2,500 target that would require continued institutional participation.
